Windows 10: My system would rather choke than use swap space

So on my main dev system running Server 2019, I’m doing some load testing on an application I’m developing. I fire up about 20 instances, and a controller spawns new ones as the old ones self-terminate at 4GB (memory leaks, bane of my existence). Anyway, my system has 128GB of ram, split evenly across two CPUs.

Regardless of whether i set my OS swap space manually or let Windows manage it, my system goes to shit. Unrelated programs and system processes start crashing left and right, and other tools fail to launch due to lack of memory.

The system remains unstable like this, well after closing my program and seeing the memory free up. I have to reboot to get things usable again.

I don’t get it. It’s like my system refuses to swap memory out to disk. I show about 120GB / 337GB in use when everything goes to hell.

Any ideas?

Swapping is the process of evicting infrequently used application memory from the computer's physical address space yet retaining it within the process's virtual address space.

This is done by writing it to a non-volatile backing store called a
swap volume. The swap volume is typically stored on a hard disk as either a swap file on a file system, or as a dedicated swap partition.

If an application references the memory that has been evicted from the physical address space the operating system will have to load it from the swap volume back into the physical address space before proceeding. This allows a computer to operate more
efficiently by ensuring that high speed memory is populated only with data that is frequently used.

Swap usage is the used capacity of all swap volumes that the operating system is allowed to use.

Windows 10 SWAP partition

Hi everyone,

I just noticed that Windows 10 has a swap partition of 450MB. I just wanna know that is it similar to Linux or Ubuntu SWAP space or different. I appreciate your suggestions.

No space on hard drive due to system reserved patition and installer files
