My touchpad buttons are behaving oddly -- they only click/select, but literally nothing else.

I got a new laptop recently It runs on the Windows 11 operating system, and essentially the touchpad buttons behave weirdly. Left-clicking and right-clicking both do the exact same thing -- they just click. I can open and close tabs, select/open apps, etc, however, the buttons don't allow me to double-click, right-click, click and drag, or highlight text, etc, and I can't even use them to select and drag the files and apps on my desktop. They just allow me to open/close/choose/select things. I have made steps to amend this problem. I played around with the touchpad settings, even the

    Explorer Behaving oddly

    Hi Alexander,

There may be an issue with your current user profile that is why you're experiencing the issue. Just to clarify, were there any changes made on your computer before encountering the issue? We suggest that you create a new user account for us to know if the
issue will also occur while using a new profile. To create a new account, follow these steps:

    • Right click the Windows logo (Start button).
    • Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
    • In the command prompt window, type net user [username] /add, and then press
      Enter.
    • In the command prompt window again, type net localgroup administrators
      [username] /add
      , and then press Enter.
    • Sign out to your current user account, and then sign in to the new account.
    • Check if the issue will occur on the new account.

We'll be waiting for the result.

  3. Touchpad - Scrolling and Selecting Text

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand the issue that you are currently facing, we will try the best we can to resolve your issue.

This issue might occur due to incompatible or outdated drivers and missing updates.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run hardware and Device troubleshooter

    • Click on the Start button, and type “Troubleshooting” on the search bar.
    • Click on troubleshooting, then click on “Hardware and sound”.
    • Under Hardware and sound, click on “hardware and devices”.
    • A pop-up will appear, click on the “Next” button and your hardware troubleshooting will start.
Hardware troubleshooter will detect minor issues and try to fix them, automatically.

Method 2: I would suggest you to completely uninstall the touchpad driver and reinstall it.

    Follow these steps.

    • Press “Windows key + X” and click on “Device Manager”.

    • In the list of devices, you should see the touchpad drivers.

    • Right click on the device and then select "Uninstall".

    • In the uninstall dialog, make sure you select the option to delete the driver package from the system. This causes the driver package installed earlier to be deleted.

    • In the Action menu of Device manager, select “Scan for Hardware changes”
option. This will cause the device driver to be reinstalled. Once the driver is installed, close all windows and restart the computer.
Method 3: Further, if there no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then download the latest drivers and try installing it in Windows 8 compatibility mode.
Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

    a. Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

    b. Right-click on the driver setup file and click on
    ‘properties’.

    c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Hope the information helps. Please let us know if the issue persist and we will be happy to assist you further.
