Windows 10: My Windows 10 pc stopped displaying File thumbnails of images and videos and other extensions

some program icons in the taskbar and the start menu such as the windows store and calculator app also show a white folder icon.I tried changing the folder view to show thumbnails , clearing icon and thumbnail cache , restoring to a previous windows restore point . So far it looks the same . Also I tried https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5645-rebuild-icon-cache-windows-10-a.html what was mentioned here to rebuild the cache and it didn't work .

Specify which file extensions display thumbnails?

Trying to duplicate the behavior I used in Windows 10 where images and videos would show thumbnails but documents (txt, docx, pdf, etc.) did not. So far all the options I find appear to be all or none regarding the display of thumbnails.

Is there somewhere, registry setting or otherwise, where I can specify the file types/extensions which show thumbnails?

That shows thumbnails for images and videos, but it also shows thumbnails for other undesirable file extensions such as TXT, PDF and more. That didn't occur with Windows 10. I'm looking for how to control which extensions show thumbnails rather than this all-or-nothing approach, or to find a setting which continues with the Windows 10 logic.
