Windows 10: My Windows Update process is repeatedly cycling between "Getting things ready" and...

I've been trying to update my Windows system for the past few days. It starts by saying "getting things ready", then goes to "installing." Once the installing goes to 100%, it resets to "getting things ready" at 0%. Overall, it seems as if the updating process is going in a non-stop cycle where it is unable to successfully update.

Win10 Upgrade to Pro Stuck at Getting things ready...

This appears to be the exact description of my problem. Once I completed a hard reboot, the computer then went into an update completion cycle, apparently completing (and clearing) a stuck update.

From that point, I was able to re-initiate the install process and it quickly moved beyond "Getting things ready..." and it only took about 10-15 min for the process to complete. Once complete, the computer self-initiated a reboot for final activation of
services and my Windows edition now indicates Pro.

Stuck on - Getting a few things ready


Figured I would chime in here too in case anyone else has this issue. Disabling anti-virus did not work for me. What I did was use an optimization utility to delete all my junk files and bad registry entries. I used http://download.cnet.com/Wise-Care-3...-75744630.html and basically stepped through all the different utilities and tools it offers in the free version. Restarted the computer, disabled anti-virus for good measure, and it flew right by the "Getting a Few Things Ready" step.

I've noticed a lot of issues are related to files generated by windows, or by the utility. I think the cleanup utility probably just wiped out whatever junk file was clogging up the process.
