  1. Nag: "Required updates need to be installed"

Or maybe it is "Required updates need to be downloaded". I don't remember. In any case thee is only one option given: download or install. When this message appears the whole display is locked. Sometimes Esc removes the popup; sometimes Esc (and everything else) is ignored. If Esc is ignored, the only option is to force power down. The message doesn't even indicate that this is Windows talking about a fix from Microsoft. It really looks like malware so I never let it proceed. If it is a valid Windows fix it will show up in the Update Status display after I reboot. I understand that Windows really wants me to install a fix when this happens, but why does Esc sometimes work and sometimes not? And what prompts this popup for some fixes and not for others?

    :)

Have you implemented any form of Windows update block?

Or perhaps (as you're uncertain about the message) the update has been downloaded but has not been installed because it requires a restart and it's during your active hours period?

Note the exact message as the two cases are quite different and search for literally that message.

  6. Yes. I used gpedit to set "Notify for download and notify for install", but I'm not sure how well that works on Win10. Sometimes I get a message in the Notification area, but more often I get this popup.
Hmm. I assumed it was about download (because it's supposed to notify me of downloads) but maybe that's a bad assumption. It definitely doesn't say anything about a restart being needed.
Yes, I know I should note the exact wording, but I'm always a bit rattled when the popup pops up ... especially when Esc doesn't get rid of it.

I guess I could take a picture of it, but I can't use anything like Snipping Tool or Print Screen because everything is ignored except (sometimes) Esc. Whenever it happens I'm hesitant to do anything it (whatever "it" is) might interpret as saying "ok".

My real question was about the difference between when Esc works and when it doesn't, but if this isn't a familiar sounding event I'd better dig a little deeper. Every time this has happened there has been a Windows update ready to download, but I still have a nagging suspicion the message isn't from Windows.

Go to Settings and look at the Update page and see what it shows. If something is pending it will show that.

Also to take a screen shot, hold down Windows Key and hit Print Screen and see is that works.

For someone to reliably answer that would seem to require them to have had experience of setting Windows updates to notify. That's probably the minority...

For reference: this is the block applied and a description of the expected behaviour:

  9. As I said, every time this message has popped up there has has been an update to download. But (as I didn't say) there have been many times that the Update page has shown available updates when the popup didn't pop up. Even if doing a Print Screen works, it won't do any good if I can't bring up something to paste into. When this popup is displayed the rest of the desktop is greyed out - nothing can be selected except the Ok box. Sometimes the Esc key is active - maybe half the time. The mouse is alive, but that's it!

And I should mention that this popup happens only once a day. Whether I can Esc out of it or have to do a hard power off, if I don't download the available update I will get the popup again the next day but never again on the same day.

Ah! I just found a Reddit post asking about this. The message is "Required Updates Need to be Downloaded", and the box I've been calling "Ok" is really "Get Updates". The Reddit post is at Windows Update notifications are worse than any UAC : Windows10 Unfortunately, there are no other useful hits (but at least I know I'm not the only one seeing this.)

You can take a photo of what you see...

Let's step back - why do you wish to block updates?

Do you wish to stop the download? Or the possibility of an unexpected restart?

    What is your underlying concern?

If the former, set your connection to metered (Wifi and ethernet).
If the latter, use a utility like 'Don't Sleep' (free) to block restarts, together with Active Hours.

  11. Once in a while I've seen a Action Center message - maybe 2 or 3 times, and not recently. I wonder if MS has changed the behavior in order to discourage people from using this option.

Just a note about the W10 Print Screen function.
When you hold down the Windows Key and hit Print Screen your screen should flash and a picture is auto saved under Pictures/Screenshots.
