Need faster Wifi extender - any ideas

    Hi there

I've been temporarily sent "by She who must be obeyed" to my shed which I use as an office as she's sick of wires around the place (Lan cable) !!! -- will have to do some plastering etc to hide these later !!!

I've got a decentish wifi extender -- the 5Ghz band shows up reasonably --just slightly off green but not into the yellow colour but perfectly good enough without having to drop down into the 2.4 GHZ band. I'm about 20 Metres from the main router

I'd like faster wifi if possible --OKLA is showing this but seems a waste when from LAN I can get nearly 1Gb/s

    Wifi speed :

I know on 5Ghz band I should be able to get theoretically around 800 - 900 Mb/s - it will depend also on the wifi adapters in the computer -- but I tested the extender with computer attached to it via a 10 Gb/s Ethernet port.

Model of extender I'm currently using is netgear Nighthawk EX7000.

I don't care paying more if the thing works faster.

    Cheers

    Battery drains really fast

Extended use of WiFi is the cause of faster Battery drainage ..

connect to internet from pc via windows phone 8 through usb cable.

We're not Microsoft employees, and have no idea what they might do.

Wifi though is typically much faster than a cellular connection, and way, way faster than what's needed for streaming video. I'd like USB for a variety of reasons, but speed's not really one of them for me.

If the router is AC you can get up to 3gig speeds

    Hi there

That's what I'll do later --been planning that for a long time --I'll enclose it in a plastic sheath so it won't be seen and is waterproof too. I've got similar for Electric supply @220V AC cable to the shed.

But not doing it now -- you haven't experienced Icelandic Winter -- it's not the cold so much but the wind can make it almost impossible for digging in the garden. !!! Currently -4 deg where I am (deg C) and too windy to do much.

@Samuria -- home ROUTER is fine it's the wifi EXTENDER extender it has on the spec AC1900 but I can't get anything like the max at Wifi.

Bit of DIY later to do !!!!

    Cheers

I won't be doing any digging myself either just looked at the weather channel say's it's -15 c here and I believe it.

I would not waste your time making a home made sheath, I would buy the proper outdoor cable.

Also instead of buying consumer or even what they refer to now as pro-sumer routers I would look at Ubiquity WiFi which has units that are just WiFi and you hook them up to the Lan port of your router, They are about the same price as pro-sumer but better.

    Hi there

I'll do it with PRO quality cable of course -- the problem is the actual WIFI of the extender not the cable fibre optic router installed by the ISP.

The main ISP cable router has got 4 LAN connectors so I'll run all 4 to the shed from the main router. Good quality LAN cable I´ve got "in Spades" !!! metres and metres of it ("nicked" from the cable company when they installed the 1 Gb/s fibre optic broadband soon to be 10 Gb/s and eventually up to 100 Gb/s - probably long after I'm dead and gone) !!!!

Internally in the main house I have a NAS stowed away in a hidden cupboard / closet with multimedia files on it which can get played around the house on various devices . This NAS is connected to main router via a small wifi extender with a single LAN port - I simply have a tiny piece of LAN cable from the Ethernet cable on the NAS to that extender --good enough for that job. -- standard wifi is perfectly fast enough for that. 110 Mb/s is more than fast enough for Netflix etc and visitors etc.

If I need more than 4 LAN ports in the shed I'll hook up the extender - so long as I have at least 2 mega fast connections that´s fine.

The cable company can supply an 8 port LAN fibre optic cable router but the extra cost isn´t worth it in this case. I´m not running a BANK !!!

Problem with an extender plugged directly into the main cable router is that it's another device near the router -- don't want that and I don't think a 5GHZ signal would be decent enough at 60 - 70 metres or more away.

    Cheers

I would look at a WiFi mesh system such as Orbi:
Orbi: A WiFi System for Better WiFi Everywhere | NETGEAR

My guess is that the WiFi Extender is just too far away with too many walls in between from the main router and it is not getting a good signal to communicate with the router. You probably need an extender in between, especially at least one on the outside of either the house or the shed.

    Hi there

Thanks for the suggestions -- I think running 4 LAN cables from router to shed is the answer - once the weather gets OK it's not to hard to lay outdoor cable alongside my electric cable -- just have to wait a bit for weather. With LAN I can easily get around 1 Gb/s even at 75 metres --tested it with cable out of the window and plugged into a desktop Ethernet connector in shed. Can't leave it like that of course !!!!but tested fine.

It's easy to forget sometimes other people in the same house aren't so keen on computer hardware experiments with wires / cables all over the place and tools with bits of hardware also lying around !!!!!!! - What I do in the shed she doesn't care about !!! so long as I don't fuse the whole place !!!

    Cheers

And I'm not going to touch that....even with a 100m LAN cable!

    Hi there
    @Callender

    Thanks for the info

problem wasn't extending range of Wifi !!! it was not getting my 1 Gb/s speed out of it. !!!!! The Lan cable to shed is the solution I'm going with

Out in the Wellies in around 1hr or so
-- I've got cable and tools and it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours at most.

At this time of year I only get reasonable daylight between around 11.00 and 16:30 GMT - and it's actually +2 deg today !!!! so no prob for me.

    Cheers

  15. Just lay the quality Lan cable on top of the ice to the shed.
One of the two days of the next summer you can put the cable in the ground.
