  2. External DVD not recognized, no IDE ATA/ATAPI in Device Manager

    Hello Tami Ryan,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

I understand your trouble about not being able to watch DVD smoothly, and I am very sorry to hear that you still haven't solved this problem after trying many solutions. In order to better understand the situation, I would like to confirm the following information to you:

    • Could you please provide your external DVD model?
    • Could you please provide the brand and model of your Windows11 device?
According to the following operations, please check whether the column of "unidentified device" will appear, which can help us narrow the scope of the problem and further analyze the problem, the specific steps are as follows:

    • Keep the external DVD disconnected -- search in the Windows search box and open the Task Manager -- click on the details -- Connect an external DVD on your device -- see if a box like "Unrecognized device" appears.
If this column appears, it indicates that an external device has been identified, which may have an externally driven cause for the problem,

If this external device access is not recognized, it could indicate a driver problem.

Please provide the answers to the above questions, which will determine our next step. Looking forward to your reply.

External DVD not recognized, no IDE ATA/ATAPI in Device Manager

I'm asking again because I never got an answer that addressed all aspects of my question.

I have no internal DVD drive on my laptop with Windows11, no DVD driver in Device Manager, the trick with the command prompt didn't work, and there's nothing that says IDE, ATA, or ATAPI in Device Manager. There is an atapi in Registry Editor, but when I right click > New > Key it doesn't automatically create anything called Controller0. I tried renaming what was created from NewKey1 to Controller 0 and following the directions about New Dword and restarting, but nothing changed. The Registry Editor bit about "HKEY...08002BE10318" shows no LowerFilters or UpperFilters.

All of the above also applies to my Surface that has Windows10. Is there any way to watch DVDs or even listen to CDs that doesn't involve one of the above steps? I'd prefer to find an answer for my laptop, but would settle for the Surface if the only solution involves W10.

    Hi ibme,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that it can get difficult if the system are not working as expected.
However, we can go ahead and try few steps to see if we can resolve this issue.

Method 1: Check hidden devices in Device Manager.

    1. Press Windows Key +x
    2. Click Device Manager
    3. Go to Views tab and click on Show hidden devices from the drop-down menu.
    4. Then search for hidden drivers if any IDE ATA /ATAPI DRIVER
      are listed.
    5. Uninstall all the hidden drivers and reboot the PC, and check if that helps.

I also suggest you to refer this article on
Your CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows or other programs
, and check if that helps.

If you need any additional assistance, please write back with the
    model number for dell computer?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Regards,
