Need help with bios for Asus laptop

    hi,

i'm trying to figure which bios i should be using from the asus website. the laptop is asus k52n running windows10 x64 pro. the current bios reads v2.13, dated 08/21/2010.

the asus website has nothing listed for windows 10. there is a choice between "windows 7 32/64" and "others". the listing for windows 7 x64 is described as v2.30.3 which would seem to be a newer version, however it is dated as 07/14/2010 which is older than my current version. the "others" listing is described as v3.12 and dated 11/24/2010, which is definitely more recent than my current version.

i'd appreciate some advice on which to choose. i've been having some bs(od) issues for some time and i'd like to see if a bios change would help. here's a link to the asus driver webpage:

    thanks.*Wink

It seems like it is caused by hardware issue. We suggest contacting your device manufacturer to assist you further on your concern. This kind of issue is best handled by their support team.

All I see is the flash utility listed, I didn't see any actual BIOS files listed? Unless the utility has the BIOS file in it? And I don't think it does, I think its just the utility you run from Windows to flash the BIOS, which will ask you for a BIOS file.

For my K75DE, the BIOS and flash utility are listed separately if I select 7x64 for my OS. If I select Windows 8.1, only the BIOS files are listed. The same BIOS version 2.17 is listed no matter what OS I chose.

As in post #2, all that I see there are BIOS update utilities. There are no BIOS .rom files (or equivalent) for the utilities to flash. The file with the version 2.30.3 is the Winflash utility. It contains no BIOS data.

It's likely that you have the latest BIOS version for the notebook.

I'm not suggesting you should fork over the $35 or whatever they charge nowadays to provide a "guaranteed" BIOS update, but the esupport Web site does offer a BIOS check/BIOS upgrade service. If I remember correctly, they'll let you use their tool for free to see if you need a BIOS upgrade or not, but will want to charge you if you want them to provide you with said BIOS. Might be worth checking into: BIOS Upgrades - eSupport.com (check the BIOS Wizard item).
    Hope this helps,

so yeah, after attempting to run the flash utility i realized there was no bios file to reference. just terrible! i thought maybe it was the 409.msi file, but it looks like that's all part of the installer. so i'm not sure what to do. i emailed asus, but do not expect to get a response.

i did try the link to the bios update service you referenced and here's what it showed:

it states that a bios update is available but i'm very skeptical of this info. it also lists several of my drivers as out-of-date which i KNOW are not.

i'm confused. is there a chance that i could find an update listed under a different model? or is that a really bad idea?

I'd be leery -- no, make that TERRIFIED -- of using a BIOS from one board on another. You could brick your system if the BIOS chip is soldered, not socketed, or force yourself to fork out $45 to buy a new replacement chip if it is socketed. Try finding some Asus enthusiast sites where they get into hacking BIOSes and ask them what to do: they will definitely have strong opinions, if not useful information.

Just out of curiosity, why are you looking for a BIOS update?

They are usually made to fix problems, or to allow the use of new CPUs. The latter is usually of little interest for a notebook.

I've been getting bs(od) on this laptop for years now. i haven't gone all out to fix the problem because it only happens when i startup after a complete shutdown (not a restart). so i basically just avoid the problem by never shutting down (just restarting and sleeping).

i've tried reinstalling win7 a few times and now with win10 it's the same thing. i've gone through my drivers. removed and tested without antivirus. so i just really want to make sure that the bios is up to date.

i've recently run the windows driver verifier and installed the debugger kit as described here:
How do I fix a Blue Screen in Windows using Driver Verifier?

i don't know what to make of the results. most of the dump files read "Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe". others listed "memory_corruption". i have no clue what to make of any of it. i did run an extensive memory test, which ran all night, and turned up no issues.

i can live with it, but i'd rather not. i never believed the bios was the problem, but i was hoping to rule it out. unfortunately i have no way of knowing where my current bios stands because asus doesn't seem to be supplying any of the files. so, that's where i'm at. *Confused

  11. Flashing your device with an incorrect BIOS will almost certainly brick that device. A failed flash is more often than not, not recoverable from.

Me personally, I would never ever use a third party utility to look for or flash my PC. I just plain out don't trust them. That's just my personal opinion. Same deal with those driver finder utilities, I just don't trust or believe in the value of such utilities.

My ASUS laptop hasn't gotten a BIOS update in years. The last supported OS for it is Windows 8.1. I have flashed it to the latest one offered by ASUS. I would never ever flash it with a BIOS from another model, no matter how similar it was to my model.

Have you tried resetting all BIOS settings to defaults? And also try turning off Windows Fast Startup if its enabled.

I agree with alphanumeric on 3rd party driver utilities!! They can be nothing but trouble and you should only get your drivers from MS as Windows will update your needed drivers, or the original manufacturer, and no where else.

Its strange that ASUS doesn't list any BIOS files what so ever, for that model? I guess they never updated it from the original BIOS it shipped with?
From what you posted it looks like this has been a long standing issue? And with multiple operating systems? If it did it from day one you should have returned it. It sounds like it could be a hardware issue. If you already have a thread on the go on the BSOD please post a link to it. If not, it might be a good time to start one and get some more info on the issue.

well i appreciate all your thoughts on this, i definitely will not attempt any flash without a bios file direct from asus. i generally assumed it wasn't a hardware issue as it never occurred in safe mode. maybe i'm wrong?

anyway, i'll try to resolve the issue (once agian) in the near future. i plan on reinstalling win10 and will try to find some guidance tracking down the problem before i install anything. is there a way to prevent windows from installing drivers during the install? hopefully i can install them one by one, in order to find the culprit. i need to find the easiest way to do that.

Have you tried to contact Asus?

I'm not optimistic that will help, you, but there's the odd chance that they can give you access to a beta BIOS.

    Best of luck.
