  1. Need help with permissions on new HDD

I just installed a new 2TB SeaGate HDD as a storage drive to go along with my 256gb SSD and I am trying to make the drive writeable. I have put ownership of the drive under the administrator (me) but still when I add folders they are not writeable and I am unable to change the permissions on them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Johan,

    It is possible that your
    HDD was unreadable
causing the error message to appear. We recommend that you perform these troubleshooting steps and check if there are any changes:

    • Shutdown
      your
      PC.

    • Unhooked
      the
      HDD
      and
      turn on
      your
      PC.

    • Reconnect
      your
      HDD
      and
      restart
      your
      PC.

If the issue persists, we suggest that you contact your
    laptop/computer's manufacturer
    for further assistance.

Update us on how it goes.

    Regards.

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have a better clarity on the issue and guide you accordingly, respond to the questions listed below:

    1. Have you signed in as an admin to your account?
    2. Are you aware of any changes that happened on the computer?

Meanwhile, you may try with the below methods to resolve the issue.

Method 1: Enable Hidden Admin account.

Although Windows gives the Administrator user status to this user account, Windows 10 automatically generates another super or elevated Administrator account during the installation and the account is hidden by default due to security reasons.

To enable hidden admin, you may follow the suggestion provided by
    rocaw
dated February 21, 2018 from the article-
How to enable the hidden administrator in windows 10.

Once enabled, boot into Safe mode. To enable safe mode you may follow the article
Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10.

Try changing permissions to Secondary drive by following the article
    Access Denied error.

If you are still unable to take permissions, follow method 2.

Method 2: Reset permissions from command prompt.

    • Open Command Prompt in Admin mode.
    • Type cd <drive letter:>

E.g.: If your HDD drive is assigned as D: then you can type
      cd D:
    • Type Takeown /F D:
<D is the drive you are trying to reset permissions to>
    • Type icacls D: /grant Administrator:F /t
    • Type exit.

    For reference:

    Icacls

Let us know if you are able to take access of the HDD.

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

    No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
