    Need Help With Shrink Volume!

Hello everyone! I was trying to dual boot windows 10 and ubuntu and before i can do that i have to make a partition for it and i have a hard drive in my laptop that is over 220 GB big but when i go to create a partition it says the biggest i can make the partition is 6 GB!!! and i have a ton of free space. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated because no other site has helped.

my disk drive is not shrink beyond the point

You cannot shrink Unmovable files via disk management, but you can directly directly

    shrink partition with unmovable files
by AOMEI Partition Assistant. It is a freeware for Windows 10/8/7 that can easily shrink a volume or partition beyond the point where the unmovable files are located without the need to manually disable the unmovable
    files.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forums.

It is well acknowledge that Disk Management in Windows 10 can help you shrink volume without any data loss. It is a reliable tool. You can just click This PC<Manage<Disk Management to enter the tool. And then choose the partition you plan to shrink and select
    Shrink Volume.

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

If you are using a HDD, then the files could be fragmented. Try running windows disk defragment or try using defraggler.

Windows likes to spread out and use lots of space on an otherwise empty hard drive. There are system files that often get placed deep into the disk that Windows considers unmovable. So if you are trying to shrink a volume using Windows tools then it will only let you shrink to the "unmovable" file. In your case, 6GB.

For this reason it works better to use third party software to do the job. These programs will move everything into the new smaller space you choose, allowing you to use as much of the hard disk as you want.
Good programs are MiniTool Partition Wizard, Easeus Partition Master, Acronis Disk Director.

I've seen bad threads about Disk Director. MiniTool Partition Wizard has never failed me.

    Need Help With Shrink Volume!

I recently got a free copy of Disk Director. Used it to re-partition 2 laptops. Not a problem.
The interface is not as graphically intuitive as PW (which I have always used up until the latest version that does not have a free bootable CD) so I can see where someone might get confused if they were not being careful.
