Windows 10: Need to buy a new netbook for running CNC router, WTH is this Windows 10 "S" nonsense?

Googling I found an article that says it's 10 Pro but locked down to where the only software that will run is that which is downloaded via the Store - which means all of my FOSS wouldn't run but it seems like there'd be at least one review for a 10S laptop that points this fact out which has my questioning if it's even true.

Just looking for a quick straight answer, will I be able to run whatever I want on 10 S or is it the PC equivalent of the failed Windows 10 RT version from back in the day?

EDIT: I found out that the "S" version of Win10 was discontinued and in its place is Win 10 "S Mode" where there's an option to disable it. Glad I completely missed that whole drama while it happened (as was the case w/ RT).

VEVOR CNC 3018-PRO 3 Axis CNC Router Kit - Offline Controller - plugged into USB - no COM port assignment

I just purchased the above CNC Router, and it came with an offline controller and USB cable that is used to plug into the PC. the Candle software then uses the COM number to load the CNC Plans to the controller.

the issue I have is when i plug it into my PC, Win 10 is treating it as a USB Drive - and assigning it a drive letter, and opening windows explorer. because it does not have a COM number, I am unable to use the software to create carving projects.

is there any setting type i can change, or a workaround to where the PC see's it as a COM port vs a drive letter? i am going to buy a different USB cable to see if it helps.

I have been searching for 3 days, and have not found any help on what to do, so I thought i would ask the big brains
