Windows 10: Need to change microsfot account on my Windows 10 as changed my institute

Hi there,


I recently changed my work. Both, the previous one and the new one, use Microsoft Office, I have very similar range of access to both Windows 10 licenses and I have two active work accounts now.


My main issue is that my laptop is using Windows 10 with the user/pass and license of the previous institute but I need to change this to the new institute. For instance, I use my old institute's email address and old institute's password to enter my Windows 10. But I want this to be changed to the new one.


Is it possible to only change the Windows Account on this machine so I can only swap the license key, and also swap my accounts? So that I can enter Windows 10 with my new institute's password, without requiring a new full Windows 10 re-installation?

Hi Jalal. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

Normally this is done for a MS Account by going into Windows Settings > Accounts > Your Info and select Sign in with a Local Account instead. This is illustrated here:

Restart PC then go back to the same place to choose the link which will now read Sign in with a Microsoft Account instead. Put in the desired MS Account name to convert it as illustrated here:

Normally a work account is registered elsewhere in Settings > Accounts > Access Work and School, but you said that you sign into Windows 10 with the account so it must be a MS Account, too. But you may still need to remove the old account in this location as
well.

Cannot change the name on my account

Thank you for your response. Windows 10 doesn't offer an option to remove your full name, or option to use an username instead, as it's possible when using a local user account. You can get around this concern by changing your Microsoft Account name online
to something that doesn't completely reveals your full identity, such as only using a few letters of your name and last name, or something entirely different. Kindly follow the steps below on how to change the name on your account.

How to change your sign-in screen name on Windows 10:

• Use the Windows key + I keyboard shortcut to open the Settings app.Click Accounts.
  
• Click Your email and accounts.
  
• Click the Manage my Microsoft Account link to open the web browser and load your profile.
  
• In the main page click the Edit name link.
  
• Change your name and last name to something less identifiable, and click Save.
  
• Restart your computer.

Be reminded that you'll notice that your name will change as you sign-in, but it could take some time until the new changes sync to your machine. We just need to remind you that by following these steps you'll be changing the name on your Outlook emal and
other Microsoft service.
