Windows 10: Need to generate and backup codes from my Microsoft Authenticator

I cannot get Authenticator to give me my codes through my iPhone 15 pro. I had no issues when I used it on my previous iPhone which was the iPhone 12 but I transferred over to the 15 pro and now I cannot generate any kind of codes. I tried to log into Roblox and since I have the 2-step verification enabled, I need Authenticator to generate the code but it’s not doing anything for me!

Microsoft Authenticator generates 30-second old Google Authenticator codes

I had been using TFA with a particular website for years. The website says it requires Google Authenticator app, but that app is not available on my mobile device. For years, I was able to use the codes from Microsoft Authenticator, which does run on my
mobile device.

At some point, the screen on my mobile device shattered and I got a replacement device and did a backup and a restore. Today, I learned that backup and restore DO NOT restore the Microsoft Authenticator accounts and instead you get System Exceptions on failing
to get the TOTP code.

Luckily, I had some emergency codes written on a piece of paper and was able to log into the website. Once there, I generated the QR Code to set up TFA again, but even though Microsoft Authenticator code added the account and generated 30 second codes, my
particular website always rejected them with "Your verification code was incorrect". I can not set up TFA with Microsoft Authenticator!

I installed Google Authenticator on an Android device and noticed its codes are one series ahead. That is, once my Google Authenticator code expires, it becomes the Microsoft Authenticator code. I tried to authenticate as fast as I could after the code became
visible on the Microsoft Authenticator, and it is still not fast enough for this particular website. If I use the Google Authenticator codes during its 30-second window, they work.

Shouldn't Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator generate the same codes during the same 30-second window?

Microsoft Authenticator Account Backup and Recovery: Coming to iOS

Howdy folks,

Many of you have asked for backup and recovery for the Microsoft Authenticator app. We’ve heard that need, and that’s why I’m happy to announce that we’ve just released a backup and recovery feature for that app. Now, your Microsoft Authenticator app will keep your account credentials, so you won’t get locked out of your accounts when you move to a new device.

We’re launching this feature beginning with iOS first, and we’ve already released a private preview to our iOS beta testers. Over the next few weeks, we’ll roll this out to all iOS users. We’re rolling out to iOS first as building the app using iCloud simplified our development. But later this year, we’ll add this feature to the Android version as well.

Try it out!

If you don’t have the Microsoft Authenticator app yet, get it here. If you want to try this feature before it’s available to the general public, sign up here to become a beta tester.

If you’re already one of our beta testers, you can install the update (version 5.7.0) on your iOS device once it’s available to you.

Turn on Backup

In the Microsoft Authenticator app, go to Settings. Under Backup, turn the toggle to ON for Auto backups and follow the prompts.

Behind the scenes, this is how it works:

We encrypt your backup data with your personal Microsoft account

We then store the encrypted backup with your iCloud account

And that’s it! Your account credentials are now backed up in the cloud and will stay up to date when you add, delete, or edit your accounts.

Recover on a new device

To recover the app on a new device, sign in to the same iCloud account and personal Microsoft account as on your previous device.

After you sign in, the following options will be available:

Your OATH verification codes for your third-party accounts and personal Microsoft accounts

The ability to enable push notifications for your personal, work, or school Microsoft accounts

If you have additional questions, check out our Microsoft Authenticator docs. You can also use the Microsoft Authenticator forum
to offer suggestions, ask questions, and talk with our support team and other fans of account security.
