Windows 10: Need to revert from Build 1511 (10586.36) to 10240

I went with the Windows Essentials 2012 here which more or less was the replacement for WLMail not Messenger however since Skype actually a much better service is what MS starting bringing in to replace Windows Live Mail. That still allows you to keep the live.com accounts simply being the upgraded form. 10 however has it's own Mail app while that wasn't something that impressed me much there and why I simply went for the older W8 form of mail. Note this was originally for Windows 8 at the time while still kept for 10 since 8 saw these newer apps take the place of the WLM functions.

Personally while still having it on I never use it! I simply keep a bookmark on the bookmarks bar in each browser to go direct to the Live account's inbox as well as a second for adding to the Block Senders list typically spam until lately the MS Spam Fighters option I went with automatically flags stuff I get in from vendors as well as junk! You simply click the not junk or junk button on that and a new window opens you have to close out and then find the filter nuked the junk or moved the mail into the inbox. I actually have a copy of Micrrosoft office home edition 2010. What a pain installing all the updates! I'm still at it.

 

I had some fun here lately with the new laptop getting things including creating a full system image backup which I would also recommend you consider there once you have it all set to go! While the 2010 flavor of Acronis True Image Home edition works fine on the main build it simply wouldn't even detect the laptop's drive unlike when going to back up the previous laptop being an older model HP that came with 7 and upgraded to 10.

This newer Toshiba model just came out in September with a choice of either 8.1 or 10 depending on where you shopped for it! Naturally 10 was the choice as well as finding the best deal. I would say a 750gb drive with 6gb of memory compared to the older 32bit 7 model with only 3gb and a 500gb drive as well as a higher type of optical drive only lacking the open button is otherwise a good deal for about the same price 3yrs. later. *Smile

You'll get there sooner or later however being this is more of a new type of experience for you there. Here having installed a variety of OSs over the years and often taking a day or two to get everything on or on again for any reinstall I tend to keep busy with secondary tasks until a restart is needed until everything is where it should be. With 10 the first thing noticed right away was the installer would go for more updates right from the start and also why it takes a full hour for Windows alone to go on compared to 7's 20min. by dvd or flash drive even, 12min for copying the setup files over to the drive.

The amount of programs you add afterwards however are usually what will chew up the most time as well as seeing all the latest updates downloaded. That's another one of the main reasons many will opt for some imaging problem in order to see an image made of the OS drive immediately afterwards in order to avoid the reinstall everything from scratch task.

 

I got Outlook installed. Boy were there a lot of updates! Thanks for the reminder, I'll do a full system backup. I used to use Acronis. Now I'm trying EaseUs Todo backup.

 

I'm familiar with Easeus but haven't much of anything with that one but gave it a fast look some time back. Another one I have is the Paragon ExtFS for Windows which is supposed to allow you to mount Linux volumes in Windows that still needs a bit of work to see how that one works out. While Acronis and DiskWizard are long time residents in the imaging wares with the DW app being able to image any drive but to only be restored on a Seagate brand drive there while the Paragon Hard Disk Manager 14 just got the 2016 Gold Award with Acronis coming in second for the paid programs. I was looking at replacing the 2010 Acronis the frown according to some is on the 2016 that was labeled as being bloated and likely going with Paragon there. I still like Acronis however since it offered the compression not seen in the Windows option for keeping the size on disk down when creating and storing multiple images actually for multiple desktops and laptops! One thing I will caution about here as far as imaging goes I should add is that after so long you should plan on replacing any you have stored. I found that out when grabbing an image in October 2010 and going to restore it in May 2013 and still ended up seeing the same Explorer issues until seeing a full clean install of 7 a few weeks after in early June! Images have a need at times to be tested as well if yo;u have a spare drive laying around to test them with as far as checking the integrity while just the same an image can also be mounted at times in order to recover select items without seeing a full restoration. MS had that option available with the Virtual CD-Rom Control Panel for XP, Vista, 7 I have to try out on 10! Download Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel from Official Microsoft Download Center

I have enough images for trying that one out! *Smile Virtua CloneDrive (until you end up with CloneDVD2 instead for the 21day trial version! *Rolleyes ) and Daemon-Tools (Daemon-Tools Lite v10.2.0 priced low- Free for Home use!) were another pair of options seen over the years that could be used if you happened to accidently nuke something and otherwise be lost forever only to be brought back by simply mounting a backup image from a drive.

 

I use an external hard drive for backups and that's all I have.

 

Well as the PC World article mentioned it can still work out quite well for you to have an image stored there. In fact the image just made of the laptop was seen created on one of the previous internal drives placed in an external enclosure. The other two one going into the previously single drive mini tower and the second storage replaced on the main going into the new fan cooled enclosure where I have the option for usb or eSata.

That was to help handle the load here that presently you are furthest away from not having that type of need. But since you are relatively new at this type of element as far as complete system images and clean installs it always helps to have someone point out that there are all kinds of options to choose from. You simply pick out the one or more that suits your own needs the best there. *Smile

 

You're right, I am new at doing a fresh install with only one under my belt and I've never used a system image to restore an ailing PC. I made one yesterday to keep rather than doing a clean install next time. Thanks for all the information. I have so much to learn!

 

Don't feel about being new at it! No matter how long you are at it there's always something else to learn! Just with Windows alone there's a few new twists with each new version that comes out. And now MS is starting off bringing in something else to put on the plate with 10.

Surprisingly if you play things smart and follow the well written guides here as well as getting into good not sloppy system protections as far as antivirus with internet protection over just any av software that will help prevent malware from being a cause to need to reinstall Windows. Web filtering that blocks out bad sites entirely is a plus factor at keeping tbe bugs away as well as getting to know what online vendors are simply scam sites!

Besides malwares over the years a trend that still continues to grow is quickie sites to take your money! I've run into on one occasion back in 2013 when running a search for a particular model board to use in a case I was passing along and no order confirmation came when finding this place off of one of the better known shopping sites. The site was found to have only been open a few months with a volume of complaints stacked up from people all over showing how fast these places can come and go!

As for system images I could actually do with or without here from having everything backed up manually as I go along where those larger storage drives just put in lately are already 70% full! Mostly while storing the recent image made for the Threshold 2 upgrade over the previous build I didn't even both for 7 Ultimate on the now second OS drive since that was due for a clean install I have been taking my time on getting around to. Been having too much fun with 10 lately I guess! *Roflmao2

You;ll get there in time so there's no big rush as far as acquiring experience with this stuff. For me I was already in the Electronics field testing other types of equipment and simply got into custom building rather quickly for the start I saw. It won't require you to be a rocket scientist by any means however to pick up on things as you go along! *Smile

Well that's the way a place like this should be helpful! I've been some other places where the atmosphere was much different on some occasions and would never refer anyone to them either! Too much newbie bashing and arrogance over any common courtesy and being helpful. Some good people are the ones in charge here which makes the difference!
