Windows 10: netbios outside segment

HelloHow do I query for the name of a host outside of my network segment?Eg.:My host is MYPC with IP 192.168.1.3 1.x subnetThe other host has IP 192.168.3.9 3.x subnet

Netbios

I've seen lots of problems with Windows 10 and Netbios. I am unable to netbios from a win 10 machine to any other. Works fine from a Windows 7 machine. I've tried every single change I could find for the registry, firewall, hosts, lmhosts, you name it and
I've tried it. Still I cannot netbios from Windows 10 to any other machine, regardless of OS.

I'd love a fix/solve for the problem but there does not seem to be one. I have a need to access machine via the \\machinename\c$ (or IP\c$) method. However, if I am unable to get this to work and if the future has no ability to do the above, then the next
question is - what is the replacement?

 

NetBIOS discovery

Ok, I have 3 pics you can see to how to make your network shares accessible via private LAN, and not from outside as you requested.
Pic 1:

go to settings > network & internet > wifi and scroll a bit down till you see advanced networking options, click that.
Which should take you to pic 2:

, now set private exactly as you see in this pic.
Then in pic 3:

, set your guest/public networks as follows in the screenshot. It should prevent access from outside while you can access your shares on your private lan.

Can you tell us what you're doing? Step by step? What program are you using? Like I say, if you're using VLC, any codecs you install won't help you at all since VLC doesn't actually look outside of its own libraries.

Just list the steps that you're taking.
