Netgear DDNS vs. a simple email?

I am researching VPN but it seems that if I am going to use VPN I should also use DDNS. I've looked at several threads here to get a better understanding of DDNS (thanks NavyLCDR for all of your contributions) and have the following question. It may seems not too relevant but the answer will help me to understand just what DDNS is doing. So here's the question: What does DDNS do for me that a simple email sent to a specified addresses when the IP address changes would not do? (The question assumes that I am the only one who would care.)

    Thanks, Bob

    :)

A reference to "netgear.com" domain on the DSL modem goes to all clients

Dynamic DNS has nothing to do with this particular issue. The netgear.com is the internal domain being generated by the modem. DDNS allows your chosen public domain to be able to be found as the external address of the router even if the external address
changes. This gets over the fact that many ISPs do not give client devices (the netgear modem) a permanent fixed address but change it at intervals. It used to be free (although no longer) so most used to use DynDNS.org. You set up an account and registered
a domain with them and entered the account credentials in the router settings screen, when the router detects the WAN IP changes it logs into the account and notifies their DNS server of the new address.

This is in fact irrelevant in your case because the external address of the router never changes, it is the modem WAN that is controlled by the ISP. The dialogue from the D-Link would tell the DDNS service the address 192.168.1.64 which does not work on
the internet anyway, you would need the same dialogue on the Netgear router.

Is there a particular problem you are trying to resolve other than the name appearing in the Ipconfig report?

OK, that helps a lot. There is one other reason than it shows up on the IPConfig /ALL. I actually own a public domain "merowland.com" which I was wanting to use some place. I guess it cannot be used instead of "netgear.com". Unless someone has a way
to eliminate the "netgear.com" and replace it with "merowland.com", I'll just have to live with it and use "merowland.com" elsewhere. Obviously, my understanding of domains and their usage is poor and thanks for some of the education.

Nothing really. DDNS just gives you a human friendly name you can go by, instead of an IP address.
