Network Adapter Issues: Slow Internet and High Ping After Reboot

Hi, After restarting or turning on my computer, I encounter an issue with low internet speed and high ping. I use a LAN cable to connect to the internet. The problem is temporarily resolved if I disable and then re-enable the network adapter. My motherboard is the Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z790 AORUS PRO X U3E1, and the network adapter is the Realtek PCIe 5GbE Family Controller. Steps I Have Taken to Resolve the Issue 1. Updating Network Adapter Drivers Updating Drivers via Device Manager: I opened "Device Manager" through "Manage" on the "This PC" icon. In the "Network adapters" sectio

  2. Random High Ping Spikes

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It sounds like you've already gone through a number of troubleshooting steps to resolve your high ping spikes issue. Since the problem appears to be isolated to your PC, there are a few more things you can check to potentially identify and resolve the issue:

    1. Update Network Drivers

Ensure that your network drivers are up-to-date.

    1. Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting "Device Manager."
    2. Expand "Network adapters," right-click your network adapter, and select "Update driver."
    3. Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."
    2. Disable Background Applications

Some background applications can cause high ping spikes by using a significant amount of network bandwidth.

    1. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    2. Go to the "Startup" tab and disable unnecessary startup programs.
    3. Check the "Processes" tab to see if any applications are using excessive network resources and close them if necessary.
    3. Check for Malware

Malware can cause network issues, including high ping spikes.

    1. Run a full system scan with Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus software.
    4. Adjust Power Settings

Sometimes power settings can affect network performance.

    1. Open Control Panel and go to "Hardware and Sound" > "Power Options."
    2. Select "High performance" as your power plan.
    5. Disable Network Throttling Index

Windows sometimes throttles network performance to prioritize other tasks.

    1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile.
    3. In the right pane, double-click on NetworkThrottlingIndex.
    4. Set the value to FFFFFFFF (8 Fs) and click OK.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. Use Ethernet Connection

If you're using Wi-Fi, try using an Ethernet connection to see if it resolves the issue.

    7. Check Router Settings

Ensure that your router is properly configured and that QoS (Quality of Service) settings are not limiting your PC's bandwidth.

    8. Disable Large Send Offload (LSO)

Disabling LSO can sometimes resolve high ping issues.

    1. Open Device Manager and expand "Network adapters."
    2. Right-click your network adapter and select "Properties."
    3. Go to the "Advanced" tab.
    4. Select "Large Send Offload V2 (IPv4)" and set it to "Disabled."
    5. Select "Large Send Offload V2 (IPv6)" and set it to "Disabled."
    6. Click OK and restart your computer.
    9. Contact ISP

If none of the above steps work, there might be an issue with your ISP's routing to your specific PC. Contact your ISP for further assistance.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the high ping spikes on your PC. If the problem persists, it might be worth checking for any hardware issues with your network adapter or considering a professional diagnostic.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards

Slow internet connection from Wifi - Network adaptor

    Hi Maegen,

Slow internet connection could be due to outdated network adapter driver or Wi-Fi signal interruptions.

We would like to know some additional information to better isolate the issue:

    • Have you tried updating your network adapter driver?
    • Do you have any anti-virus or 3rd party security app running?
    • Is your computer updating Windows or other programs?
    • Have you done any changes on your computer prior to the issue?

In the meantime, we suggest that you try to run Network Adapter troubleshooter and
Internet Connection troubleshooter. It will find and fix problems with wireless network adapters and Internet connections. Follow the steps provided below:

    • Press Windows key + X and select Settings.
    • Click Update & Security, then choose Troubleshoot.
    • Click Internet Connections and Network Adapter.
    • Click Run the troubleshooter.

We will wait for your response.

  4. Network Adapter Issues: Slow Internet and High Ping After Reboot

    network adapter upgrade

    Hi Keith,

If you're using an old TP-Link adapter, I highly suggest that you buy the latest model. It would help you getting the fastest internet connection depending on your internet speed. I personally use TP Link TL WR941ND router for almost a year and I have no
issues with the speed of the internet. It would be best to contact TP-Link support to get the high-end and cost efficient adapter at the same time.

Regarding the speed of your internet, I suggest that you get in-touch with your ISP support for better assistance. My personal advice is to get
FiOS. It provides higher speed of internet than the usual copper wiring.
Thus, I can recommend that you update your network adapter driver to improve the performance of your internet connection. Follow these steps:

    1. In Device Manager, select Network adapters, right-click your adapter, and then select Properties.
    2. Select the Driver tab, and then select Update Driver.
    3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
    4. Restart your computer.

Should you need further assistance, just let us know.
