Windows 10: Network discovery and file sharing are turned off.

When I click the Network folder in explorer a banner near the top with a light yellow background displays the message, "Network discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Click to change." When I open Settings > Network & Sharing > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings, Network discovery and File and printer sharing are both on for private networks and off for public networks. I am on a private home network. This problem started approximately a week ago. How can I fix this? Thanks.

Network Discovery & File Sharing refuse to stay ON

Hi,

No, I don't have Malwarebytes installed.

I also followed the steps from the support link you suggested, but to no avail.

Actually all was fine until a day ago. This issue happened overnight.

Enabling Network discovery & file sharing (by any method) does not stick.
It promptly switches back to OFF.

1. Make sure that the following dependency services are started:
   • DNS Client
   • Function Discovery Resource Publication
   • SSDP Discovery
   • UPnP Device Host
     
2. Configure the Windows firewall to allow Network Discovery. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. Open Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Windows Firewall.
   2. In the left pane, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall if you are running Windows Server 2012. Or, click Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall if you are running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server
      2008 R2.
   3. Click Change settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
   4. Select Network discovery, and then click OK.
3. Configure other firewalls in the network to allow Network Discovery.
4. Turn on Network Discovery in Network and Sharing Center.
