Windows 10: Network Drive Issue - Read only via mapped drive, yet Read/Write if access same shared...

Hi,To elaborate on the above question.Two windows 11 pro machines PC 1 & PC 2 connected to routerInitially, the two computers could not access each other on the network, something to do with setting up accounts with pins, and this was covered, and resolved here:- https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cant-access-the-other-windows-11-computers-on-my/97d61be9-4e6a-40d0-a64a-ce1217ab2544 in my case it was Rob Ainscough suggestion, near the end of the discussion, that worked.Once I entered the PC's name in PC 2's Windows Explorer, I was able to map network drives.Folders

Permission issue, shared drive Windows 10.

1. May I know the exact error message?
   
2. Have you shared all hard drives or any particular folder within the particular hard drive?
   

Since you have mentioned that you are getting error related to permission issue, please refer to the troubleshooting steps provided by “Azee N” dated June 2nd 2010 on
Providing permission to drive and try
providing permission to the drive.

If the issue still persists, we would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below to re-map the drive.

1. Disconnect the drive by right click on the drive and select disconnect (if the drive is mapped).
   
2. Then re-map the drive by referring to Map a network drive
   and check if it resolves the issue.

Mapping hard drive problems

Ping is blocked by the Windows firewall usually, 7 this may have been taken out of the firewall by default not sure. But basically check that sharing is enabled as suggested. On my win7 laptop here i have for sharing settings:

Turn on network discovery
Turn on file and print sharing
Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders

Sharing permissions can still say read or read/write access to folders. so dont worry so much on security there.

 

How can I browse a network drive I have read-write access to in read-only mode?

You could right click the share you wish to access as read only
select Map network drive

it will assign a drive letter to the shared folder example: (Z

now using Firefox you can go to the url file:///z:/

this will open the shared folder in a read-only state within Firefox.
