    I have a Surface Pro 7 and yesterday I was suddenly unable to connect to any network at all. I ran the network troubleshooter and it says my IntelR Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz network driver is not operational. When I check my hardware and connection properties under settings it says my network driver is not operational but also that my Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter is Not Present. I have tried the network reset, I have tried uninstalling the network driver, I have tried updating it, I have tried updating to windows 11, I have tried reverting back to windows 10. None of this has fixed the

  2. Windows 10 network driver

    Hi Daniel,

    Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    This could be due to incompatibility of the network adapter. Please try the suggestions below and check.

    Step 1: I would suggest you to run Internet Connection troubleshooter.

    Internet Connection troubleshooter.

    • Press “Windows key + W” and type “troubleshooting”.
    • Select “Troubleshooting”.
    • Select “View all” on the top left corner.
    • Click “Network & Internet”.
    • Click on “Internet Connections”
    • Follow the on-screen instruction to run the troubleshooter.
    Step 2: Update the network adapter

    a. Press Windows key + X and click Device Manager

    b. Expand Network adapter

    c. Right click the driver and click Update driver software

    Step 3: Update the network adapter from the computer manufacturer's support website and check.

    I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I appreciate your efforts toward solving the issue. I will certainly help you with this. Kindly follow the below given methods.

    Method 1:

    I suggest you to run Network adaptor troubleshooter and check if it works:

    • Click on Start and enter
      troubleshooting in the search box.
    • Tap or click Troubleshooting.
    • Tap or click Network and Internet, tap or click
      Network Adapter, and follow the instructions on your screen.


    Method 2:

    Reinstall the Network driver in compatibility mode

    Though you have installed network driver numerous times and it didn’t helped. The issue could have occurred due to the drivers installed not being compatible with Windows 10.

    In order to use the drivers which are designed or developed for a different Operating System, we need to install them in compatibility mode. Please follow the steps below to uninstall the network driver:



    • Press Windows Key + R.
    • Type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.
    • Right click on the Network adaptor and select
      Uninstall.
    To install the drivers in compatibility mode, follow the steps below:



    • Right click on the setup file of the driver and select
      Properties.
    • Select Compatibility Tab.
    • Place a check mark next to Run this program in Compatibility mode and select the
      operating system accordingly from the drop down list
    • Click OK and run the setup.
    Method 3:

    Restart the WLAN Auto Config service

    If the issue persist, I suggest you to restart the above service as it should fix the error you are getting. This is a service that configures wireless security and connectivity settings.

    Follow the steps below to restart the WLAN and Wired Auto Config service:



    • Press Windows Key + R
    • Type services.msc and hit Enter.
    • Search and Right click on the WLAN Auto Config service and select
      Restart, or click on Start if it’s not started.

    I understand your inconvenience. We will assist you with it.

    I suggest you to update all the drivers in your computer to its latest version. Also I suggest you to install the audio and network adaptor drivers in compatibility mode and check.

    Download the latest audio and network adaptor drivers from the manufacture website and follow the steps provided below.

    Follow the steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

    • Download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
    • Right-click on the installer and click on "Properties".
    • Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select previous Operating System from the drop down.
    • Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.
