Network Drives will not reconnect at start up for Windows 10 - October 2020

So, I have read many articles about the network drives not reconnecting at start up for Windows 10 in 2018 and have seen those work arounds. Recently my Windows updated on 2 of my computers and now they do not reconnect to the network drive at start up. There is the proverbial red 'X' on the drive symbol in File Explorer.

Reading the 2018 articles is less than helpful because things have changed and those commands do not appear to be valid any more.

I am not a programmer and would not know how to write one of these 'scripts' as a work around.

What is going on and how can I fix this. Every morning I have to go through the following routine: 1. open File Explorer; 2. Disconnect the drive; 3. close File Explorer; 4. Wait a few minutes; 5. Reopen File Explorer; 6. Map the network drive; 7. close File Explorer; 8 Reopen File Explorer; 9. check to see if drive reconnected.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 evolutions of this to get it to reconnect. This is a waste of resources having to do this every morning.

Is there a solution to this?

:)

Network drives not reconnecting after October Windows 10 update

Hi Larry,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forums.

Are the computers on domain?

I suggest you to try with the steps mentioned below.

Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key and the R key together on one of the Windows 10 machines.

Find each of the services in the list below. On each service, right-click, select Properties, and set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed start), then click Apply and OK.

• Function Discovery Provider Host (FDPHost).
• Function Discovery Resource Publication (FDResPub).
• Network Connections (NetMan).
• UPnP Device Host (UPnPHost).
• Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPSvc).
• Peer Networking Grouping (P2PSvc).
• Peer Networking Identity Manager (P2PIMSvc).
• Also make sure that TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is enabled.
• Reboot the computers and see if the devices are visible.

Also ensure that TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is enabled.

Repeat the process for all Windows 10 machines.
Hope it helps.

Mapped drives may fail to reconnect after starting and logging onto a Windows device. Symptoms include:
• In File Explorer, a red "X" appears on the mapped network drives.
• Mapped network drives show as "Unavailable" when you run the net usecommand from a command prompt.
• In the notification area, a notification displays, "Could not reconnect all network drives."
Workaround: See KB4471218 for workaround scripts to automatically reconnect a mapped network drive when you log on to the device. Next Steps: Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available by early December 2018.
