Network error message - Windows cannot access \\[computer]. You do not have permission...

All the computers on my home network have access to each other except one which can access the others but is inaccessible to all of them. They get the "Windows cannot access \\" error message when they click on it in network file explorer. The problem arose a month or so after I installed a new Linksys router a couple of years ago. Since then, I have made all the recommended changes in various services under services.msc and made sure that both SMB 1.0 client and server are checked under Windows features. However, nothing has worked.

A laptop on the network does have access to a single folder on the inaccessible computer in two ways. One is via mapping and the other via a specific program that uses the files in that folder. Right after I changed the router and before the inaccessible computer abruptly became inaccessible, I used that program on the laptop to access the files on the presently inaccessible one. Even after the inaccessible one became inaccessible, the laptop's program was able to access those files via its own File/Open choice. Moreover, after the other one became inaccessible, I was able to map a drive to it, and the mapped drive still works. However, since then I have been unable to map to any other drives on the inaccessible one from any other computer on the network, including the laptop.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    :)

  2. cannot access file/or permissions

I have a file i need to run on Windows 7 Home Premium. I get the error message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

So I right click and choose Properties to access the permissions but I cannot. In the Security tab I get a message saying, " You do not have permission to view or edit this objects permission settings.".

Next I boot into the Windows 7 Hidden Administrator Mode - and even with this I get all the same error messages.

Please help me as I really need to run This file.

    Permission to access network

    Hi Kristen,

You might be experiencing this issue because you lost permission to access the network resource or shortcut after upgrading your computer. To better assist you with this problem, we would like to know the following information.

    • Are you using the shortcut to access a file or folder located on another computer in the network?
    • Is the file or folder located on the computer that you recently upgraded?
    • What is the exact error message that you received when accessing the shortcut?
    • Are you using a homegroup to share files between devices on your local network?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

In the meantime, let's run the Network troubleshooter. This troubleshooter finds and fixes common connection problems. Here's how:

    • Click Start.
    • Start typing Network problems, and then select
      Identify and repair network problems
      in the results.
    • Follow the steps in the troubleshooter and see if that fixes the problem.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to post a reply.

    Network permission using Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate the efforts taken by you in resolving the issue. I understand that you receive an error, ‘you do not have permission’ when trying to access files on the network. I’ll certainly help you with this.

    However, please let us know:

    • What is the complete error message that you receive?
    • Which build version of Windows installed on the computer? To check type:
winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
      Enter.

I would suggest you to try accessing the computer using the IP address and check if you are able to access it. Follow the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows key + R, to open
      Run
      dialog box.
    2. Type \\IPAddress (ex: 192.168.x.x) and check if you are able to access the drive.

I would suggest you to try enabling NetBios on the computers and check. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + R, to open the
      Run dialog box.
    2. Type ncpa.cpl and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Right click on the network connection that you are using and select
      Properties.
    4. Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
    5. Under General tab, click on
      Advanced
      .
    6. Click on WINS tab.
    7. Select Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
    8. Click on OK on all the windows.

Also, try restarting the Function Discovery Provider Host service on all the machines.
