Try the IP. If you are running any kind of Internet Security software, it can cause issues with networking, along with not having the adapter set for Private.

What is the IP of your computer? What is the IP of the device that you need to connect to? This is not hard stuff, since it is the one thing that everyone knows where to find when they are asked and it is how the computers see each other on the network. IP's associate with MAC ID's of network adapters. Netbios is a simple name assigned that can allow lookup with the simple name vs. the IP.

IP's are always the way that has been used since the dawn of networking for systems to talk to each other on a network and the Internet.

Open a command prompt on your system, then type ipconfig. You'll see an entry come up labeled IPv4 address. Use that to create a UNC name such as \\192.168.0.2\users\public. Instead of a machine name, you're using an equivalent IP address. That's what the first respondent was talking about. Just a different way of identifying a computer on your network.
Of course, you need to do this on the PC you're trying to reach over the network, and use its address from the machine you're working on. Hope this makes sense.
    No big thing!

Even on the pc it will be hard to access the desktop as its private part of a user profile so trying over a network for that folder will only work if you have the rights of that users profile. try another folder outside the users profile
