  1. Network failure after Windows Update

    Hi all;

tl;dr - Windows Update borked the networking on one of my PCs.

I've got two Windows 10 machines, a primary (Windows Professional) and a secondary (Windows Home). The secondary machine is basically a headless backup machine. It's slower, but it's fine for file hosting, doing downloads, and stuff like that. It's connected to a bunch of external USB drives that I use for backups.

Last night, I got the "Your PC will reboot to up necessary Windows updates". It rebooted, and took about an hour to install whatever updates were needed. After the reboot, I discovered all sorts of problems, like the firewall configuration appears to be blank, all of the system hotkeys are gone, as well as most of the startup programs that ran on powerup no longer running at logon any more.

But the biggest problem was that I couldn't connect to the VNC server, or by Windows networking. It got worse when I sat down at the PC and found that even ping just gives "General Failure". Although it normally has a static IP, I configured it to use DHCP, flushed the DNS cache, run the netsh winsock reset, and rebooted. It gets an IP address, so it's connecting to the router, but still has no network connectivity. It can't see out, and the other machine can't see it, either by network, or by raw IP.

As you can imagine, a file server that can't access the network, or be accessed by the network, is useless.

So, I booted with a thumb drive Linux configuration. It obtained an IP address, from the router, and had full internet connectivity. Rebooting back to Windows, there's no connectivity again. It gets an IP, but nothing else.

Of course, the Windows troubleshooter just says "contact your network administrator".

I'm assuming it's a network driver, but I'm not sure what I can do about it. This is one of those fanless all-in-one PCs, which came with Windows preconfigured, so I don't have any configuration media. And without networking, it's kind of hard to get networking.

This was working fine for the past year without any issue, until this upgrade was inflicted on my. I have a recent (week old) image backup of the C: drive, although I'd have to mess around with boot media to be able to reflash the C: drive with it. But even if I do, Windows will just re-inflict the upgrade again.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with this update? Any recommendations? Is there any way to fallback to pre-fscked mode without Windows screwing it up again?

  2. Windows 8 failure configuring updates and reverting

I agree 8 is awful! It's not for me though... I replaced a broken screen in a Win 8 laptop that was given to me and I am going to give it for free to someone that can't afford one so they can do homework at home. Yes I took it from 8 to 8.1 back on 10/09/2014. This is what I posted there...

"Great post! I found a similar one. I would like to point out that you may want to edit your OP...

    1. Step 1 should read to disable AUTOMATIC updates, not disable manual updates.

    2. KB2871398 should really read KB2871389

I would like to say that KB2917499 may also be needed as it was in my case. I also had to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter after installing those 2 updates. After these steps I was able to begin my 8.1 download from the Microsoft store. I don't know if it made a difference or not, but I also went into the Bios and disabled "Secure Boot."

It was a helpful post. Thanks!

    How to Dump Networking Parameters?

Had a customer with this problem, they had a brand new Dell Optiplex 3050, with Windows 10 1709, and Realtek Gbit Family of lan adapters (wired connection). After much troubleshooting (many suggestions listed in the course of this thread), it turned out the PC needed a bios update. Among the updates listed on the dell website for bios version 1.52 (I flashed it with the latest 1.92) was "Update RealtekLOM".

LOM is "lan on motherboard" and the Realtek has flashable firmware.

One step for others having this issue is to check their computer manufacturer's website for "Lom" firmware updates for the particular network adapter - whether integrated or an add-in.
