    Network Level Authentication stopped working

My main computer is Windows 11 call it Main and part of a small network controlled by a Windows 2016 Server Essentials. For several years I have been logging in remotely to Main, which has 2 or 3 months ago upgraded to Windows 11, and the other network computers using the RD Gateway component of Essentials.Maybe 3 days ago that login from my home computer to Main began failing with the previously unknown Network Level Authentication error. I tried every solution I found in Google. Turning off NLA works, it is how I am now logged in, but it is not my preferred state. I have gone back and f

How to enable Network Level Authentication for RDP?

    Hi K.Kong,

The question that you have is too complex to be answered here in the Microsoft Answers forums. For more information regarding
Remote Desktop Configurations and Windows Servers, I suggest that you post your question on our
TechNet forums instead. I found some posts there that might help you. You can access them in the following links:

  3. Network Level Authentication Issue

Ok so here is my situation.

I have 50 Windows 2012 R2 servers which I have permission to remote access.

But when I try to initiate an RDP session to any of them I get the error:

"The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support"

I can connect to the servers using a local admin account and I can uncheck the tickbox
"Allow connections from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)"

After this I can RDP to the servers with my domain admin account.

However, the trouble is that the setting gets re-enabled for security reasons by our security team and then I am back where I started.

The really weird thing is that the error does not occur for everyone. For example, my colleague and I have the exact same Windows 10 laptops. He does not get an error at any stage, even if the setting is ticked or not.

This leads me to believe there is a setting on my Windows laptop which needs to be changed?

in windows 10, how do you remove 2 level authentication protical?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

The issue description seems a bit unclear and I would like to have a better understanding before we start working on it. I would appreciate if you could help me with more information.

    • What are you referring to when you say “set up 2 level authentification protical”?

    • As you mentioned when installing Windows 10 you got a prompt to set up 2 level authentication are you referring to 2 step verification?
If you are referring to 2 step verification then you may refer to the Microsoft help Articles given below and check if that helps.

How to use two-step verification with your Microsoft account

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification

Hope this information helps. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with Windows in future. We will be happy to assist you.
