  1. Network name incorrect

I had a Linksys router E1200 with LAN ports and WiFi 2.4 G that worked fine for years. A few months ago I needed to improve it to give more more features and chose a Linksys WRT3200ACM MU-MIMO that also includes 5GHz WiFi. Setup using the Linksys online method was more complicated but I got it configured easily enough. The end result was a router with all four LAN ports connected and several devices spread over both 2.4G and 5G WiFi networks

I copied most of the settings from the old to the new router so that I had very little problem getting them all active on the local network and the internet.

I took advantage of the extra capabilities by changing my ISP's fibrenet speed from the basic 20M/20M I had been using to 200M/200M. The change went smoothly although the modem box had to be changed to work at the faster speed.

After a couple of weeks I rechecked the speed using the built-in Win 10 (1909) Speedtest but found that although the speed was higher it was around 64/64 up to 92/92 at times. After some toing and froing with their help desk I realised that my 3 year old desktops LAN port was a 100M max type! A surprise! But it explained why I couldn't get to the speed I was promised. Trying the same test on an old desktop gave much better results as the port on that 11 year old model was a 2G type. So now I knew that the fibre was able to provide the high speed I had ordered.

As final check I plugged in a WiFi module I had lying around that was capable of 300M and also using the 5G frequency. With the LAN port disabled the desktop and the router happily worked together and achieved rates up to 180M. I removed the WiFi module and enabled the LAN port to get the overall configuration back where it was with the thought that I would look for a 2G LAN card to install later.

But that was when it got strange! Now instead of showing that the desktop is connected to the router with its name of CLAN it shows the internet connection via the WLAN5 WiFi channel. That obviously isn't possible as the Wifi module has been physically removed from its USB port!

The internet connection has to be via the RJ45 LAN sockets and cable - that is all there still is on this desktop now. BUT, I cannot find any way of telling the Win 10 Pro OS that simple fact. I cannot even rename the connection or discover the correct network. On the Network and sharing centre the only ones listed are the two WiFi network names - the basic router name which accesses the LAN ports isn't there.

There must(?) be some place where it still should appear. Or is there?

    :)

  2. Windows 10; Network Name

    Hi,

The Registry steps follower that resolved the issue.

But could you tell us why it appears to select a network status name based on your past Wi-Fi network connections, and then applies it to your wired Ethernet connection?

    Thanks.
