Windows 10: Network sharing is not working between windows 11 and windows 10 computers

HelloWe have two computers with windows 11 and windows 10 respectively. Both are connected to same Ethernet LAN cable to the same router.networking sharing was enabled and with password protection turned off. Computers Vanished From File Explorer But Network Still Works

I agree with @Try3. I have tried every suggested method to fix Windows networking suggested on these forums. All at best only worked for a short time. The only things that helped was:

1. Batch file I suggested in an earlier post
2. Creating shortcuts to computers on my home network

Note these two things are not fixes but workaround. However, at least they help and have never failed.

I have shortcuts set up for eight computers on my home network. I have created a folder on my desktop called My Network to hold the shortcuts. They have a mix of the following operating systems:

• Windows 10 - 4
• Windows 7 - 3
• Windows XP - 1

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows 11 Network Sharing Not working

A clean boot was not required. Just checking the feature "SMB 1.O/CIFS File Sharing Support" as suggested by you, turning off password protect sharing” and rebooting works.



I have a few observations:

1. It does not work if I check “Turn off password protected sharing” under All Networks.
   
2. It works after I check “Turn on password protect sharing”. However it asks for credentials and after I provide the credentials it works.
   
3. Is there any way “I turn off password protect sharing” and still make it work? The minute I check this box, I go back to my original message where it says “Network error. Windows cannot access \\CHANDRA
   

A note on the credentials on my \\CHANDRA laptop with Windows 11. It took me a while for me to figure out the username and password to be used from \\MADHIRAS laptop (Windows 10) while accessing the \\CHANDRA laptop over the network. It uses the user name under C:\Users which in my case was “CHAND”. When I login to the CHANDRA laptop it does not show “CHAND” as user name instead it shows “Chandra Madhira” and when I provide my Microsoft account password it allows me to access my laptop.

Could you throw some light on why user id is truncated to CHAND? Or is there a way I change the user id to a more meaningful one like say “Chandra” or something like that. Am I supposed to do that on the Microsoft web site? I have been a long time user of Windows Vista and only in 2020 I got into Windows 10 and now in 2022 Windows 11. In vista we had an account locally stored on the laptop. However from Windows 10 onwards I find some integration of laptop accounts with Microsoft accounts. Things got complicated with Windows Hello feature in Windows 11 and the PIN it comes with.



Anyway, thank you once again for your help. It would help me get a better understanding of Accounts in Windows 11 if I can get answers to my above questions. Please do so only if you have the time. My issue is solved to a large extent and so the above info would be nice to have and not mandatory.
