Windows 10: Network why Windows won't let my Mac connect while it can connect to the same Mac?

After some struggling to try to connect a Mac to a Win10 machine, and that same Win 10 machine to the same Mac, I finally resolved to connect from the Win10 machine to the Mac - on which I can navigate any attached drive and content. However, trying to connect from the Mac to the Win 10 machine keeps failing, even though I see the Win10 machine when I click on Network on the Mac. I am then being prompted to ''Connect as'', then get message '' you are attenpting to connect to the server 'xxxxxx'' - Click Connect to continue". Here seems to be the issue: ''Enter your name and password....'' N

Cannot connect to Mac OSX on network

I have a Mac on my LAN and until today, it was visible under Networks and I could connect to it. Today, it does not show, yet the Mac can connect to the Windows 10 computer. To my knowledge, no changes have been made to my small office network (Windows 10, Mac, Centos 7 server). Of course, Microsoft can do things without my knowledge.

Are there some diagnostics I can run from a Command line? I did run ipconfig /renew and received this message:

Wireless LAN adapter Local Area Connection* 10: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

However, I do get this for 192.168.1.16, the IP of the Windows 10 computer:

Connecting to a Mac


Hi Guys,


I wonder if anyone here networks with a PC!


I have upgraded my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro to Elcapitan and my custom PC to Windows 10. Prior to this the OSX was Yosemite and Windows 8.1. I could connect to the Mac from Windows no problem. Since upgrading both I can't connect to the Mac. I have tried to connect to El Capitan from another Windows 8.1 since to no avail. I have also reverted the OSX to Yosemite and still can't connect to the Mac from Windows PC.


I have followed the Network and sharing setup for the Mac to the letter from Apples website. I have checked forums and had Apple support check the setup remotely and it is fine.


Has anyone else had this issue and can help because I have run out of ideas now?

Hey rtcary,
I'm assuming you say you can't connect to the Mac, because it isn't showing in the Win10 PC > Networks. Have you tried manually accessing the Mac PC from your Win10 PC > File Explorer > Address Bar and type in \\Mac-PC-Name or \\Mac-IP-Address ?

I don't know what SMB version Mac OSX uses, but if you can access the Mac using the above, then on the Win10 PC check and see if maybe SMBv1 Server/Client got uninstalled by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Featrues On/Off and look for SMB1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and click the Plus(+) to see all the options.
