    Networking excessively slow.

I have a fairly new 6 months old DELL Inspiron 17 3793 laptop. One of the reasons I purchased this unit was that it comes with Windows 10 Pro.

This the operating system I prefer, and it was on my previous laptop, an aging but reliable HP G72.

I had issues right out of the box with the Inspiron. The Ethernet would continually drop out, rendering it unusable.

I was forced to use the Wi-Fi to complete the setup, but I was getting very slow speeds.

I have CenturyLink fiber to my residence, with 40Mbps service. It is quite reliable, averages 41-42Mbps, and it never drops below 39Mbps.

The motherboard was replaced in the laptop, and the dropped Ethernet connection issue was resolved.

I have another issue though. Ethernet download speeds of large >2 Gig files ISO files for example is *very* slow.

When I say slow, I mean like 250Kbps-600Kbps. Sometimes they start okay, but after a few seconds, die down to practically nothing.

I can download the same file on my wife's HP Windows 10 Home, using the same connection, and it runs full speed for the entire download.

A good example is downloading the Ubuntu ISO file 2.6 GB from their website.

On my wife's HP, it takes about 11 minutes. On my Dell, it takes about 9 HOURS.

Funny thing is, SpeedTest.net shows there is nothing wrong, and reports 42Mbps download speed.

This greatly differs from Testmy.net, which shows around .7-.9Mbps.

Here's the kicker - Running Ubuntu from a thumb drive, any test I run, any file I download, runs at theFULL 40Mbps.

So, it would appear that there is nothing wrong with my hardware.

I have updated all my drivers, updated the BIOS, tried a different cable the one that works well on the HP.

I have performed a 'Clean Boot', with all services disable except Microsoft, and all startup programs disabled.

I have disabled Hyper-V, even though that is part of the reason I prefer Windows 10 Pro.

I have disable network 'Throttling', and tried changing every setting on the Ethernet device that I could.

Nothing works..... The only thing that brings the Ethernet up to speed is a different OS Ubuntu..

I am open to ANY and ALL ideas!!

    :)

Did our Epson printer get hacked?

Another question, is this on a home network or a work network? The steps @eidairaman1 listed are always a good first step. If this is on a work network you manage, I'd be much more concerned than the home one. It is possible someone is screwing with you, but malware could also be the culprit.

Slow internet connection from Wifi - Network adaptor

    Hi Maegen,

Slow internet connection could be due to outdated network adapter driver or Wi-Fi signal interruptions.

We would like to know some additional information to better isolate the issue:

    • Have you tried updating your network adapter driver?
    • Do you have any anti-virus or 3rd party security app running?
    • Is your computer updating Windows or other programs?
    • Have you done any changes on your computer prior to the issue?

In the meantime, we suggest that you try to run Network Adapter troubleshooter and
Internet Connection troubleshooter. It will find and fix problems with wireless network adapters and Internet connections. Follow the steps provided below:

    • Press Windows key + X and select Settings.
    • Click Update & Security, then choose Troubleshoot.
    • Click Internet Connections and Network Adapter.
    • Click Run the troubleshooter.

We will wait for your response.
