    Networking Problems

    Hello All,
I have three computers, each with a different OS flavor: Win 7 Home Premium, Win 7 Pro, and Win 10, Build 9926. All three computers show in my file manager under Network, but only 2 are available for actual use (the two Win 7 versions). When I try to login to my desktop, I get the message that the computer is not accessible and that I need permission to access it. None of the three computers have passwords, and they are only connected by a wired Ethernet network.

A similar situation arises in my HomeGroup - the two Win 7 computers can talk to each other, share files, and share my single printer, but the two Win 7 computers have no access to my Win 10 computer, and it can't share files with either of the two Win 7 computers. And the Win 10 computer doesn't even register on the two Win 7 computers.

Does anybody know whether Win 7 can talk to Win 10 or is there some 'secret' to getting the computers to share files and printer? Let me know if there is other info you need to respond to this question.

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

UPDATE: I finally found locations that I can bookmark to share files between all 3 computers (stumbled across them last night). But, the Win 10 computer can't print to my printer, only the 2 Win 7 computers can print. The Win 10 computer only wants to save the output to a file, even downloading the print driver did no good. So I'm again left with the question: Can a Win 10 computer fully talk with a Win 7 computer, or is there some Win 10 issue with printing on a Win 7 printer?

Again, my thanks for your assistance.

    :)

  3. Remote connection to Windows 10 machine (after upgrade from W8) is terminated instantly

If all your accounts have passwords, the following worked for me:

Try setting power management on your NIC to always on.

Device Manager > Right click your NIC > Power Management.

Is your printer connected with USB or is it wireless? I have my printer wireless to a windows 8.1 machine and a Windows 10 machine and have no problems printing. You should get your answer when setting up your printer if you can see it or not. I used to use software where if a printer was connected to a system with a wire connection I could print on another PC wirelessly. This was before printers had wireless cards in them. That software was called Magic network and Linksys purchased and kept it a couple of year and discontinued it because mostly all printer now have wireless cards.

So to add a wireless printer windows goes to screen where you select whether it's a wire or wireless connection and you will click to search for the printer. If it find it the printer model usually appears on the screen then Windows will save it typically with a name like Epson 3640 (Network).

    Hi,
Thanks for responding. The printer is a wired USB connection and the 3 computers share an Ethernet connection through an RJ-45 jack. And as I don't have wireless, the fact that my printer has a wireless connection protocol doesn't really do much for me as my 3 computers don't have wireless, and I don't have either the resources or the inclination to add wireless components.

More importantly I have discovered something about the problem that leaves me more perplexed. By virtue of a very stubborn virus I was forced to reformat the hard drive on both the Netbook Win 7 machine (Pro), and the laptop Win 10 machine. When re-building each machine, when I got to the network portion I entered the name of the machine and pressed "Enter" for the (non-existent) password. The Netbook and my Desktop computers (both Win 7 systems) accepted that as valid and "installed" the printer on the laptop without any further intervention from me - true plug and play.

But doing the same thing on the Win 10 legacy Laptop produced a Stopped Event, saying I wasn't "authorized" to access the material or the Desktop computer and to talk to the System Administrator! This is a one person operation - me! No combination of account name and password would work. Nor was I "allowed" to see the content of any files. etc. What is more infuriating is that both computers can see each other and talk to each other, I'm just not allowed in! I did make a password reset USB drive but could not find anywhere instructions for using it; any ideas?

    Regards,
