    New 4TB drive install..

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me..
Firstly No I have not changed yet, the reason I want to change is the drive keeps checking for errors gets to 11% and hangs there..
I have done chkdsk /f that is OK no errors reported, just the chkdsk /r that hangs..

For some reason it won’t let me add any more to the system speck but here it is. (now updated)
    Pavilion 23-f221ea prod # e6q09ea#abu serial # czc3292vmfall in one..intel pentium
    Ram 8
    HD WD 1 TB
Was win8 then updated to 8.1. then to W10. All OK no problems… I have made an ISO disk just in case.

PC mainly used for photo and editing with Adobe.

I now have Anker kit to try and clone the disk it worksfine but Acronis gives error message
Failed to prepare operations. Error code: 10 'File systemerror is found'
with extended code: 458,766 'Directory corrupted'0x5FAC360A470D39FA
    0x9F2C53C72E8BCD1F
    I have installed Acronis snapapi as suggested by them… Ifthe issue still persists, it is recommended to install the latest updatedSnapAPI driver: 1.Download, unpack and install the SnapAPI1088;

Which I have done still gives same error message.

Thx for any help - Len

  2. Thanks Len,

So this is the original drive, you have not installed the 4 TB yet.

I didn't see where you ran Malwarebytes - if you did, were there any threats detected?
If you have not run it, please run it before going to the next step.

You can change the order if you want, but I thought that if there is malware on your system, then it's best not to back it up *Wink

If I'm in the correct thread, I think chkdsk / f fixed a few issues before. Now you're combatting bad records.

I think it's important to is safeguard your personal data before going any further troubleshooting.

Let's try it this way: Use Mint Mate (Linux) to copy the data
You'll need a small USB drive or a DVD-R to install Mint Mate

Have you tried connecting the 4 TB drive using the Anker Kit? I think that's the best place to store the data you want to keep.

Make a partition large enough the 4 TB drive to hold your data. I don't want to worry about the OS or programs at this point, they can be re-installed. Locate any license keys and original Discs for software you purchased.

If you can save your data, then you can try to copy the OS and programs. It's not as clean as an image backup, and there might be some hoops to jump though to get everything back in order trying to copy the OS and pgms back.

    Download - Linux Mint
I use the Mate edition - it's spare ... Cinnamon is a bit fancier. Both work about the same.

    Documentation: Documentation - Linux Mint
Have a read though it to familiarize yourself.

Mint is a very good implementation of Linux and you might be surprised by how similar it is to other GUI OSes now

You can connect to the internet post on the forum, grab screen shots, yada, yada, yada. For the purposes of copy your data, it's great - you select what you want to copy and paste it in a new location.

I have an old set of instructions here:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/vip/32781...ml#post2794216

I think they were written to help another member and they might be too specific to that issue. The post should give you an overall idea of where I'm going and what you'll need to do.

It is not instructions I feel comfortable just handing to you though.

They'll get you started and give you an understanding, but I' think I'll have to rewrite some parts (6 was a bit confusing to me and I wrote it *Wink)

    Any questions? Ask away!

When you get the chance ....
Can you PUBLISH the Speccy report and post the link here?

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me..I have Nortons internet Security installed and is upto date and nothing found..
I have not purchased the 4tb yet I want to know that the Anker works ok cloning to a spare HD disk... I have a good spare drive that I have copied whole directories to using the Anker kit this is really fast if anyone is thinking of getting one..But as stated the Acronis is reporting error (stated above) that the source directory as a problem and is stopping the cloning..I need to find out what is causing this....All my data is backed up on my portable WD MY Book Studio drive.. I have the keys to all my software so not worried about what is on my PC drive, I could just roll back and reinstall to Windows 8 using the recovery program on the disk or from the set of disks I made when I got the pc..But that is too much work with all them updates to do.. I would rather find out what is causing this Acronis problem..
I have done chkdsk /f that is OK no errors reported, just the chkdsk /r that hangs..
Is there anyway to find out what directory is corrupt?? here is the speccy report.http://speccy.piriform.com/results/6...dREIHnlK3qUbuu
    Thx for all your help..Len

  4. New 4TB drive install..

    Thanks Len,

It's always good to know that your data is safe, so you can forget the MintMate post.

It sounds as though there are some bad blocks on your disk (chkdsk /r 'hanging') - quoted becasue it might just be taking a VERY long time to repair the bad blocks (it has to try and read the data, find a good spot to write the data, and mark that area as never use again.

I started writing long instructions to fix the drive, but after thinking about the issue, I think the best recommendation is to retire that drive.

Instead of a massive 4 TB drive, I would install an SSD - this not only 'solves' the drive issue, but it dramatically improves system performance. Kingston HyperX drives are top notch.

Cost might be the prohibiting factor - large SSDs are expensive.
After looking at the Kingston SSD search results, the prices don't seem all that bad ... I might finally upgrade this box!

You really don't need a large main drive though - just large enough to host Windows and programs. Data can be stored on external drives.

If you go the SSD route, you can Clean install windows 10 ... plus you can always access the old drive with the Anker kit if you need something off of it (that drive would become a backup drive, but only to get data off of it, not to use for backups due to the condition)

When the SSD is installed, perform a Clean install of Windows 10
    Windows 10 - Clean Install (TenForums.com)
In step one, use USB Flash Drive - Create to Install Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

You want a raw drive (not partitioned or formatted) - Windows 10 install will create the necessary disk schema as long as the drive is empty.

The install asks you to enter a key a few times
Do NOT enter a key on any screen!
You do not have a Windows 10 key that you can enter.
Press Skip this or Do this later - text in the lower left area of the window.

The license key was created, encrypted and stored in Firmware and Registered on the MS Server when you did the upgrade. Windows 10 will authenticate automatically.
All of this is covered in the tutorial, but some people miss the finer details.

You will, of course, have to re-install your programs and let Windows Update (WU) do it's work. The good thing is that Windows updates are cumulative, so aside from device drivers newer than what's on the ISO, you will probably only have to download and install one WU offer

Let me know if you want to try and fix the current drive. I don't think it's worth your time - time better spent installing the SSD and installing Windows 10 clean. Your system will be better, faster, newer *Wink

    Hi Bill,
Thanks for getting back to me and for the help.
I did look at the ssd drives a little expensive for me..I need the large drive for my photos and editing software.. the chkdsk did check the files after leaving for 4hrs, so not sure if it cleared anything as don't know where it puts the info....Update no it still has errors on c: I will try and find a way of fixing it, but will not trust this drive...So I now have the 4tb drive and will attempt to install!!
I will let you know how I get on..bound to want some help that's for sure.
    Thanks again for your help..

  6. I'll be here, I wasn't throwing in the towel *Wink

    To recap:
chkdsk /r completed after 4 hrs- correct? That's good and bad.
It's good that it corrected the bad spots and was able to move the data to a safe spot on the disk (you won't notice the difference, it's down at the bits level - it just moves the 0s and 1s on the disk - you can't really see it))
It's bad that it took 4 hrs - that means there were a lot of bad spots or a lot of data (it has to find area on the disk to write the bits - if it encounters more bad spots, it keeps looking and trying).
Once the chkdsk is done, those areas of the disk are marked "Do not use again"

Update no it still has errors on c: - lost in translation !!
    Update now still has errors?

Ok, you have the 4 TB - that's good.
You're doing the install on the 4 TB - that's very good.

It sounds as though you're on a good path - I'll read more when you post again.

It was my pleasure discussing and working through the issue with you Len.

Hi Bill thanks for getting back..

Well some good news and some bad news ...Bad news is I could not follow that tuition on clean W10 install to complicated for an old timer......I have the ISO I made on DVD disk I don't have a Flash stick well I do but it's password protected and would not be of any use the tuition seemed to be for flash.....Anyway....So I had another go at the cloning and I had to install the drive, good news is it asked my what format I remembered GPT!!! so it did it..Bad news got so far and came back with the errors on C: source drive...Well I nearly chucked it across the room...Its such a pain with these all in one pcs I much prefer the desktop case so that I can have the drives connected together laid out on the bench..
I disconnected the old drive and carefully placed to one side...Its not going to beat me I will sort that one out when I have time (with your help lol..)

So with the new drive installed I put in the ISO dvd that I made and switch it on... Up came the screen good news it was installing great....Then I remembered something in the back of me head about empty unformatted drive I new then I was stuck....Well the good news is the clean install went very well..and is working great....Bad news is I now have a 1.7tb c: drive and two 900ish tbs partitions.. I would have liked a smaller c: drive just in case of problems, I could have just format c: and not worry about the data on the other partitions....I don't think it can be shrunk any more OR is there a way of making c: smaller... Any help greatly received...Or do I learn by my mistakes and do another install..I can do, but don't know how to put the drive back to original state..

Computing is fun is it not???

  8. New 4TB drive install..

    So I understand ...
The cloning initialized the drive as GPT and only got so far before failing to read the source drive - right?

You said: Then I remembered something in the back of me head about empty unformatted drive I new then I was stuck
IF you installed clean to unallocated space on the 4 TB drive - everything should be easy.

If the cloning process created the 4 hidden partitions, I'd suggest that you re-install on an empty drive.

I'd like to see how the 4 TB drive is partitioned now.

To make it easy use my custom Disk Management snapin - it displays what I'd like to see.

If you already downloaded the snapin, go to Step 2

Step 1: Download this zip file (contains dmDskmgr-vd.mmc)

    dmDskmgr-vd.zip
Step 2: Double click dmDskmgr-vd.zip to open the compressed folder
Double click dmDskmgr-vd.mmc to launch the custom Disk Management console
You'll get an output similar to this:

    New 4TB drive install.. [IMG]

Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image
Attach the image to a new post.

You can also use Disk Management in the x-Menu (right click the Windows logo, select Disk Management)
Select View > Bottom > Disk list
Maximize the window and grab the screen shot.

    We'll go from there.

Yes computing is fun, I spent my corporate career in the industry - laughed for 50 years, still laughing

  11. Yes, the image is fine and the schema looks good.

    To shrink C:

    Launch an elevated Command prompt
-> right click the Windows logo on the task bar, select Command prompt (admin) from the menu

Run defrag a few times - first to consolidate the free space, the to consolidate and defrag the file/folders

    defrag C: /x

    defrag C: /u /v
Run this command until there are only 4 or 5 passes reported.
Each time defrag runs, more fragmentation can occur. Windows native defrag is very good, but it is also sort of lazy (some might call it careful). It does a minimal or quick defrag.
You might see a first run with 7 passes, but the 2nd run has 9 passes (only an example). I've seen it get down to 6 and then the next execution it's at 12 passes. It does this for a reason - it's careful.

When you've exhausted defrag (might be 2 executions, but probably no more than 5 executions), you can see how much space on C; Windows will give back to you.

    Launch Disk Management
    Right click C:
    Select Shrink Volume...
It will do some calculations and present how much you can shrink it.

Accept all that is offered or define the size you want from what is offered.
You can't take more than what Windows offers though *Sad
The hard part is converting MB to GB.
    1 GB = 1024 MB
    2 GB = 2048 MB
    3 GB = 3072 MB
    4 GB = 4096 MB
    5 GB = 5102 MB
    ....
Multiply the MB above by 10 or 100 to get larger conversions
    10 GB = 10240 MB
    20 GB = 20480 MB
    30 GB = 30720 MB
    40 GB = 40960 MB
    50 GB = 51020 MB

    100 GB = 102400 MB
    200 GB = 204800 MB
    300 GB = 307200 MB
    400 GB = 409600 MB
    500 GB = 510200 MB

    You get the idea

The only thing I can do is laugh - too many computers would be thrown out the window and some of the machines I've worked on were quite large *Tongue

Hi Bill, here is a screen defrag did not give much if any..Here is a screen shot..No will not allow any shrinkage just 1900000 and all the rest of the fields 0 and greyed out..I think its a reinstall...

Also can can you tell me this..
Something else I have just thought of..On my old original HP drive before I upgraded to W10.the one with the chkdsk problem...there was a recovery partition to go back to Win8...will that still be there and usable?? I saw on here somewhere that after we have been using W10 for a month we would not be able to roll back to 8.1..

    Thanks again..Regards -Len

  13. New 4TB drive install..

Well that's no fun - no re-install necessary though
There's something at the end of the drive that is preventing Windows shrink. It could be any data of any size. I noticed MS defrag does put stuff out there now.

Minitool Partition Wizard might be the tool to use.
I suggest the bootable version - hold on let me collect the links.

Re: Win8.1 on the old drive. Again, not necessary.
There is Windows.old on this Win10 install and you can if you really want - download the Win8.1 install media
It wouldn't hurt to have that, but you can come back to that after you do some disk management.

Back in a few (minutes? maybe, hours, probably!)

You're up and running - this project is more maintenance than urgent - yes?

Here's the link Bootable Partition Manger | MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable Edition and use Rufus - Create bootable USB to create a bootable USB.
    • Boot up from the USB. A screen similar to this will display.

      New 4TB drive install.. [IMG]
    • Right click on C-Drive and select Move/Resize. Click at the end of C-Drive and drag to the left until you get C-Drive to the size you want, For Example: 200GB. Click OK

      New 4TB drive install.. [IMG]

      NOTE: For 200GB, the hi-lite text field should be: 1024 * 200 = 204800
    • Move the mouse to the top left and click Apply to commit the change
    • When done. Reboot Windows.
