New ATI HD5850 stuck at c1 post

I am trying to install a new ATI HD5850 into my wife's computer to upgrade to win10. She has a x1950 in there right now. Abit AN9 32x board with 4gb ram and a AM2 Athalon 64 CPU and a 500w power supply. I installed the new card and every time I try to boot, it gets stuck at the C1 post and won't go any further. If I unplug the power cords from video card, the same thing happens. Plug the old card in, with power plugs off, the computer will go past the C1 post until it gets to the video check and gives the beeps, so I know it's not the power supply. Is this motherboard not compatible with this new video card? Is there a work around? Just trying to upgrade to 10 right now, then about 6 months to a year, will build a new rig for her.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 fails on restart

Basically I found the problem with every board that has AMD / ATI Radeon, it works fine with intel chips, but stucks on ATI cards, the same happens to my Samsung R440 with ATI RADEON chip.

Did you connect extra power to it ? It will not work without it !!!

If you are talking about the 2 6 pin pci-e plugs, then yes. I wanted to try without to see if it made any difference or not and it didn't, still stuck on c1. The x1950 card uses 1 and the hd5850 uses 2 power cord.

Without them it wouldn't fire up at all, now the only question is if PSU can give enough power. Which exact PSU is that ?

The normal procedure I'd use to change graphics cards:

With the old card in place, uninstall the drivers. Power down. (Do not reboot.)

    Swap the cards.

    Power up.

    Re-install the drivers.

That may do it. Sometimes, I've had to clear the CMOS to allow the system to boot with a new card. (The jumper is near the floppy connector.)

A quick web search indicates that a 500W PSU is the minimum recommended with a 5850, but not all PSUs are created equal. I haven't found the specs for an Antec Earthwatts 500, but I'd expect it to be adequate.

Tried all that already. The problem is, that it wont even get to the boot screen. It will get stuck at the C1 part of the boot process and go no further.

As far as I could read about it, it's good PSU and should be enough. GPU is asking for 12.5A and that PSU gives 17A on that rail. Did you try in the other PCIe slot ?

Yes. The other slot is a slave, so wouldnt do anything. I tried it in my rig and it powered up.
