New Build - 4 drives - disk management confusion

Built a new system with 4 drives as can be seen in screenshot below. Loaded Windows 10 to my 970 EVO SSD "C" drive. 2 WD HHD drives are good. Am confused as to what happened to my 860 EVO SSD drive. I took the assigned letter, E, which is fine - but it shows the rest of the drive as unallocated. If I try to allocate, it wants to assign "H" as the drive letter. Don't want anything on this drive since I need it to be a "scratch" drive for video and photo edits - don't know what's in the section that it named "E", since it does say "system...." In the end, I want this whole drive to be called "E" without any "sections". How do I make this happen without screwing anything up?

  2. Disk Management

    Hi Keith,

Thanks for providing the detail that was requested previously. Since the disk management screen that you saw is showing greyed out options, we suggest that you follow the steps below to change the partition type of your internal drive:

    • Open Disk Management then right click the partition on the disk you want to covert and select Delete Volume.
    • Once you complete the process you will see the whole disk shown as two separate unallocated spaces. Right-click the disk and select Convert to GPT disk.

After the conversion, you will be able to use the whole disk and then you can create new separate partitions.

We look forward to your response to our queries.

  3. New 4TB drive install..

    So I understand ...
The cloning initialized the drive as GPT and only got so far before failing to read the source drive - right?

You said: Then I remembered something in the back of me head about empty unformatted drive I new then I was stuck
IF you installed clean to unallocated space on the 4 TB drive - everything should be easy.

If the cloning process created the 4 hidden partitions, I'd suggest that you re-install on an empty drive.

I'd like to see how the 4 TB drive is partitioned now.

To make it easy use my custom Disk Management snapin - it displays what I'd like to see.

If you already downloaded the snapin, go to Step 2

Step 1: Download this zip file (contains dmDskmgr-vd.mmc)

    dmDskmgr-vd.zip
Step 2: Double click dmDskmgr-vd.zip to open the compressed folder
Double click dmDskmgr-vd.mmc to launch the custom Disk Management console
You'll get an output similar to this:

New Build - 4 drives - disk management confusion [IMG]

Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image
Attach the image to a new post.

You can also use Disk Management in the x-Menu (right click the Windows logo, select Disk Management)
Select View > Bottom > Disk list
Maximize the window and grab the screen shot.

    We'll go from there.
