Windows 10: New computer can't access old hard drives

My old Asus laptop died last week, psu might be the issue. Anyway, decided to get a new laptop and just try to retrieve my info with an IDE/SATA adapter. Every time I connect up the old hard drive, the usual jingle chimes in to let me know I've connected something, but the drive doesn't appear on devices and drives. The old laptop was running on wins 8 and the new one is 10.

I also tried getting the data from another previous laptop which ran on win 7. This one shows up with the other drivers when plugged in, but immediately prompts me that the ~ location is not available G:\ is not accessible, the parameter is incorrect.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Moving filed from my old drive to my new one

I had a mother board failure and had to get a new computer. I took the hard drive from my old one and changed it into a external hard drive but I can't access the files that I want to get from it. I was wondering if I used F12 and had my computer boot
from my old hard drive would this allow me to save the files that I want to folders on the desk top and then move them to my new hard drive? Thanks.

 

Hard drive compatibility?

So I just got a new computer with a clean hard drive and better specs overall compared to my previous computer. I want to put my old hard drive in my new computer so I can have all of my files on the new computer and give the old one to my little sister.
The old hard drive fits and works perfectly with the new computer but the new hard drive won't let my old computer work. I tried putting my old drive back into my old computer and it works so there's something wrong with the compatibility of my new hard drive.
I read the specs on each hard drive and the new one seems to use more "mA" and transferrs at 6.0 gb/s rather than my old hard drive - 3.0 gb/s. Could this be the reason why I can't put the old hard drive in the new system? Would it be possible to?

 

The first thing I would do is make a live Linux USB flash drive. Boot from the flash drive and copy your files to a portable hard drive or a different flash drive.
In case you're not familiar with live Linux, it's an operating system that runs off the flash drive. No files are written to the hard drive.
Linux Mint is very similar to Windows 7. You will not have any trouble using it. Here are the directions to make the flash drive.

How To Create A UEFI Bootable Linux Mint USB Drive

If Linux can not read the two drives, (I'm betting it will) then I would buy a USB hard drive enclosure.

 

Is the IDE/SATA adapter powered from the USB port? You might do better with an adapter that has its own power supply.
