Windows 10: New driver needed for Microsoft Mouse

Windows 8.1 64bit

I posted this on eightforums but have not had any solutions, so I'm trying here.

I've searched but cannot find if there is an updated driver that will work.
The mouse is basic but keeps disconnecting and quickly reconnecting every few seconds .
I have an old Microsoft intellimouse (I think that's what it was called) model ite 78cj that connects via usb.
There seem to be websites that have later drivers but I don't know if the websites are safe.
The version I have at the moment is: 6.3.9600.16384

Perhaps Microsoft don't have an updated driver (which I doubt) but perhaps a generic one is available?

Wireless mouse "driver is unavailable" issues

The error Driver is unavailable means that there is no available driver installed for your mouse that’s why it is not working. We suggest that you check the mouse driver from the device manager. Follow the steps below:

• Open Device Manager.
• Look for Mice and other pointing devices and click it to expand.
• Check if there is a driver for the wireless mouse.

If there is none, we suggest that you visit the manufacturer’s website of the mouse and download then install the latest mouse driver compatible to Windows 10.

Since the above suggestions didn't work on your issue, we suggest that you follow the steps below for us to further locate the device driver that has been causing conflict on your system.

• Go to Settings.
• Click Devices.
• Scroll down, then select Device manager.
• Look for the mouse icon, then click it.
• Right-click on the available drivers.
• Select Uninstall.
• Re-connect your Microsoft mouse, so that the system will reinstall the correct driver.

Mouse drivers in Windows 10

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Microsoft has not yet released the drivers for Microsoft Laser mouse 8000.

I suggest you install the drivers in Compatibility mode and check if it helps.

Follow the steps provided below to install the drivers in compatibility mode:

• Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.
• Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows operating system from the drop down.
• Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.
