Windows 10: new hp omen, can not install older directx versions (DirectX Setup: An internal system...

I just got a new hp omen, windows 10, nvidea 1070. I tried reinstalling my steam games and the ones that force a directx install all fail with the error message: "directx setup: an internal system error occurred Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem". (these are for all the games that have some older version of directx and force install).

although i get the error message, there is NO DXerror.log file in windows directory, there is a DirectX.log: contents are:

I downloaded directx 10 directly from microsoft and tried a direct install and get same error. I searched lot but can not resolve the problem. Things I have tried:

1. tried both web and direct installs of directx from microsoft

2. made sure .net framework installed and turned on (came that way in windows 10)

3. ran dxdiag - i have directx12 installed and working fine. I can run games that don't require Directx install just fine). The problem is the INSTALL of directx, not directx itself.


it is a brand new machine, literally out of the box, so there is nothing else on it except the 'factory' stuff.


HP support suggested I contact MS support (is there such a thing?). I am about to return machine as it is useless as-is for gaming.

internal error occured while installing directX

I tried to install a game called warframe. The data was downloaded properly and needed directX to be installed which it did automatically. The setup unfortunately failed as directX couldn't be installed and the game is now unplayable as long as i don't install
directX. I tried installing DirectX through web installers and through offline installer but both gave the errors as follows:

An internal system error occurred.

Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine problem.

I've tried different versions of directx but all give the same error.

What can i do now?
