Windows 10: New ink Replay and Rewind animation feature in PowerPoint

Hello, I’m Mark, a Program Manager working on inking in the PowerPoint team. I want to tell you about a new way to use ink in your PowerPoint presentations!

We’ve heard about all the cool ways people are using ink in their PowerPoint presentations slides from adding an extra flair, to increasing communication. Previously the animation of ink on the slides was limited to standard shape animations.

Now you can apply the new Replay or Rewind animation to ink and get the drawing effect directly in your presentations! You can adjust the timing of these animations to be faster or slower to match the experience you want.

In addition to timing options, you can also control how multiple ink objects contained in a group playback, by using the Effect Options animations. All at Once will start the playback of all ink objects at the same time, while By Ink Object will play back the ink objects in sequential order determined by the order the ink objects are layered.

Getting started

Creating new slides with the ink Replay and Rewind animations is live for Office Insiders on the Insider Channel running PowerPoint version 1907 (11827.20002) and later. This ability will also be coming to Insiders Fast on Mac in July. Playback of presentations with the ink Replay and Rewind animations will be coming to other platforms soon after.

Scenarios to try

Add some ink in your slides to callout or highlight some data or to add some flair. Next apply the Replay animation to you ink! Set the timings to what makes sense to your presentations! Rinse and repeat and send feedback!

Announcing new Ink to Math feature in PowerPoint for Office 365

Hi @Brink
This is a bit of a "Groundhog day" Feature as this has been around "Since Pontius was a Pilot" !! -- It exists in Office 2010 -- might have been removed on the way with later versions of office but still working "Loud and Clear" in Office 2010.

Note -- if your office is updated to latest version after Jan 18 then Ms will have removed it - but you can put it back in again. I really think Ms shouldn't REMOVE working features from products that still only have a limited life left -- it's probably coming from "The Dirty Tricks" department to get as many people as possible to switch to subscription Office/365 -- Well I'm not buying !!!!!.

While the Office/365 version might be slightly more user friendly it's easy enough to do this in Office 2010 -- and if you need this type of application I shouldn't think people would have trouble using the version in Office 2010.

(On Linux latest versions of LaTex are very good too for this type of functionality! although a bit (actually quite a bit) of a learning curve needed here!!!!!).

Announcing new Ink to Math feature in PowerPoint for Office 365

Hi Insiders!

My name is Tracy and I am a Program Manager on the Office Graphics team.

Office provides a large selection of equations and symbols but it can often be difficult to find the desired symbol and add it quickly into your work. Though PowerPoint has long contained the Math Input Control, we felt that the experience would be benefited by a UI and UX upgrade that kept you in your natural workflow on the canvas. We also wanted to leverage AI improvements to the math handwriting recognition model that would save you time and produce better results.

I’m thus excited to announce the new Ink to Math in PowerPoint. Leveraging Office’s intelligent services, you can now ink your equations directly on the PowerPoint canvas and then convert them to math text.

Support for Ink to Math began rolling out to Windows Desktop Office 365 Subscribers on Version 1901 (Build 16.0.11215.10000). This feature is not available in Office Perpetual 2019 or 2016.

Getting Started

Make sure that Enable services is checked in File > Options > General > Office intelligent services. Also ensure you are connected to the internet.

Navigate to the Draw Tab. Choose a pen from the pen toolbox and ink a math equation directly on the canvas.

In the Draw Tab, select the top part of the Ink to Math splitbutton. The bottom part of the splitbutton will present a dropdown menu; the top option in this menu is the new inkconversion described here and the bottom option is the legacy Math Input Control.

Your cursor willchange to Lasso mode. Lasso selectone line of ink.

Tip: The mathrecognition model currently only supports single-line math. We know multi-linemath is very important, and we are working on improving the model.

A conversion icon will show up and your ink will convert and be inserted into a text box.

Tip: After conversion, your pen will be in Lasso mode. Disable Lasso to interact with the text box. To place the cursor in the text box, switch to Select mode in the Draw Tab and then tap with your pen inside the text box. To move the text box, switch to Select mode in the Draw Tab and press and drag the edges of text box with your pen. You can also use touch to manipulate the text box.

You can undo the conversion with the undo button in the top chrome of the app.

You can also undo the conversion by selecting the text box. Use touch to tap the text box, or switch to Select mode in the Draw Tab and tap with your pen. Select the conversion icon and then select the ink optionin the callout to go back to your ink.

Alternate way to convert

After inking math, go to the Draw Tab and select Lasso. Lasso select one line of ink.

Select the conversion icon that shows up.

In the callout, choose Convert Math. You can hover over the option to see the preview.

After conversion, you can interact with the text box or undo the conversion as described above.
