Windows 10: New installation of Windows Pro for Workstations on new SDD from USB stick: Product key...

I just purchased a new license for Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. As instructed, I ran the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB stick with the setup program. I am booting from the USB stick and installing onto a brand new drive. The other drives in the computer are Linux and the system never shipped with windows installed. After choosing english/us keyboard then it requests the product key. When I enter the product key that was emailed to me as the new license for Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, I get the error: "The product key entered does not match any of the windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key."


It seems to me that with a new, blank hard drive and a new license and a new, blank USB stick, I should not have to troubleshoot a windows installation. Yet here I am asking for help to install something for which I just paid $300.


The Media Creation Tool never provided an option for entering the key. Nor did it mention specifically that I would be able to install Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, but there were no other choices. I followed the install link in the email that was sent with the product key to get to the media creation tool.

I've done a couple of clean installs, both with the MCT ISO and my Visual Studio Subscription ISO, Windows 10 Pro Workstation was not listed as an option. Pro and Pro N were listed but no Workstation. On one of my Pro installs I did a change product key, entered one of my MSDN Pro Workstation Keys and it switched to Pro Workstation and activated with a Digital License. I have no idea how you clean install it though?

You can't select Windows Pro Workstation on a clean install, its not listed as an install option. Not unless things have changed since I downloaded the Media Creation Tool ISO on the 17th.
And as far as I know Pro Keys won't work for Pro Workstation. If they would, Microsoft wouldn't have given me new Pro Workstation keys. I have a two separate lists of keys for Pro and Pro Workstation.

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
