Windows 10: new laptop, cannot get my email working

I followed the instructions and nothing happened. I got one error msg, no indication of what the problem was. Other times, after changing things, it just would not work. Went to MS help section, it should have said "out of order". I finally got a guy on the phone 9:30pm, got off the phone around 10:45, nothing worked. It was kind of obvious that the guy was just throwing things at it to see what would stick. This should be pretty simple. I have an account with the local phone company, CenturyLink, a fairly large corporation, and I kind of doubt that I'm the only one in the country that can't get this working. Has MS never come across this problem before? I doubt that also, so I don't get why it's not addressed here.

The last time I did this was quite a while ago but I seem to remember I had to enter SMTP info whatever that is, port info, other stuff. Does that have anything to do with this? I'd really appreciate some help. I've had this laptop for a week now, still have to use the old one to get my email. Thx in advance.

Thank you for the additional information. We suggest that you follow these steps to manage your email profile:

• Open Outlook 2016 app.
  
• Click on File.
• Go to Account settings drop down.
• Select Account Settings...
• Go to Email tab.
• Click Change... Here is where you can manage or edit your email profile.
