How to Enable or Disable Places Bar in Common Dialog Box in Windows

The common open file dialog box is the window that opens when you click/tap on File (menu bar) in a program (ex: Registry Editor), and click/tap on Open, Save as, Import, or Export.

The older Windows XP style common open file dialog box has a places bar (aka: shortcut bar) in the left pane to select a location you want.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the places bar in the common open file dialog box for all or specific users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

*note You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable the places bar in the common open file dialog box.

Search not working in shared folders in word.

    Jordy,

Just a further note about my comment, "I think you are using a later version of Word but I cannot see that being significant as I would expect it to be calling a Windows search component rather than an Office one".

A new set of tutorials confirms that this window is indeed a common Windows one not a Word one -

Places bar missing in Windows 10 file open/save dialog box

I upgraded from Win 7 so do not know if the places bar (on side of box) was present in Win 8. Having the places bar was very handy for me in Win 7. I had customized the menu to list my most used folders. The Win 10 dialogue box presents you with a tree on the left side making you drill down to your folders each time. I would appreciate any work arounds, customization tips or links to articles that address this issue, including 3rd party apps.

    Thanks...

  4. Enable or Disable Places Bar in Common Dialog Box in Windows

    Change "Save As" Dialog Box

Recently, I was trying to download a file, and when I tried to access the folder I wanted to save it in, it was hidden, and I have no way of enabling the ability to see hidden files in the "Save As" dialog box like there is in the file explorer. When I went
to the organize tab on the save as dialog, and down to the layout tab, I could enable and disable the navigation bar, but not the menu bar, as it was grayed out. If there is any way to change this and enable the menu bar so the save as dialog looks more like
the file explorer window, I would be happy to know.

    Thank you!
