New PC, fresh install of Win 10 Home - everything feels laggy and slow

BSD

Hi all.

Just bought a new PC a few days ago, finished building it and installing everything on it. Here are the specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700k @ 4.2GHz
Mem: Kingston 8GB DDR4-2400MHz (x2 for a total of 16GB)
GPU: None currently. Running of the integrated GPU on the CPU. An MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB is on its way.
SSD: Intel 600p 128GB M.2 NVMe PCIe
HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB
MB: Asus Z270M-Prime
Cooler: Noctua NH-L12

The first thing I noticed is that Windows feels VERY (!) slow and unresponsive. The start menu pops up very slow and laggy. I get black screens for a few seconds now and then. When I move the mouse too fast I can see "ghosting" (mouse trails) and it's not a fast, constant sweep like in my old laptop. Using chrome when I try to enter web-sites it takes 30 seconds to even load the page up - it doesn't even process anything, the web-page is simply blank and then the page comes up. When I drag windows it feels so slow and laggy (ghosting, like with the mouse.) When I extract zip files using the built-in windows utility and see the performace, the extraction speed is building up, sometimes falling to a complete 0 and then rising back up. Starting Excel, Word, Powerpoint or whatever takes about 30 seconds or so. Something is very wrong, and I do not know what.

I installed all the latest driver, everything remains the same.

I feel it's a drivers/settings problem, I just don't know where to look. I went into the system BIOS and disabled all the power-saving features of the CPU - I thought the maybe the fact it clocks down affects the OS performance. Now the CPU is running at full 4.2GHz constant and the OS performance still remains the same. :\

Can you guys assist me somehow? I'm getting very frustrated. My 3 years old laptop with windows 10 works better! *Sad

All the best,

Arye.

:)

Slow & Laggy PC

Hello,

So, a few months ago i decided to upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 Home, everything went though smoothly. a month later i decided to upgrade to windows 10 pro. after upgrading my pc has became extremely slow and laggy. i can barely watch videos, play
games, web page load extremely slow, everything just slow. so i thought maybe windows 10 pro just isnt for me, so i downgraded back to windows 10 home and everything is still the same, slow and laggy and my CPU and RAM always 100% even when i just have chrome
open. i deleted the windows.old folder, did a clean install but nothing works. any suggestion?

My pc is a Dell System Inspiron N7110

Hi, when you first installed Windows was your PC responsive?
It sounds as if you have installed other programs as well.
How is it if you do a clean boot?
Please do that and then post a screenshot of your task manager.

Have you installed all your drivers for your mobo? Can you post a screen shot of your device manager?

Thank you both for the reply!

A few things I forgot to mention earlier that'd I'd like to share with you:

First, I forgot to mention that I bought a 4k Samsung monitor and am running everything in 4k. Don't know if that has anything to do with the matter, but I thought I'd point it out. (Tried playing with the resolution and running everything @ FullHD, still no change to the laggy performance.)

Also, here's a link to a video I shot of the entire windows experience. Take note that making the video took some resources so it looks worse than the actual experience, but not by much - it isn't that far from the real thing and how things actually behave.

screen capture example problem - YouTube

Last, I thought that perhaps my M.2 drive is faulty, so I installed everything on the HDD and set the system to boot from it. Still, no good. Everything's the same. Also tried installing Windows 8.1 and everything stays the same :\

As to your questions:
@dalchina: Forgive me I must've explained myself wrong. What I meant was that after a clean install and drivers update (= installed everything on it), that's the result I get. Even before installing the drivers, right at the first time I get to use windows after a fresh install - the peroframnce is very laggy :\ Other than that, I have not installed anything beside Office 2016 Home & student.
@Plankton: Yes, I have installed all my MB drivers and updated everything to the latest AFAIK.

I'm not at the discussed PC currently, so I can't take a screenshot. Will do it later tonight and post it here.

Any thoughts so far?

Thank you very much for all the assistance!

Best regards,

Arye.

From that video....it looks flip flopped (backwards) so it's hard from me to get my bearings. That said....I can't see any of the issues you're referring to....the mouse ghosting or the slow start menu response.....it all looks normal to me.

I would suggest using Intel's drivers vs Microsoft default. Download Intel(R) Driver Update Utility
They worked way better for me on my system.

If you have already updated all the Drivers from Asus direct Ignore me.
According the the Asus support page all the drivers were updated around the first of January 2017, suggest you may need to install the drivers from Asus.
The inbuilt Graphics according to spec should be capable of handling 3 4k monitors so doubt one monitor is going to be an issue.

@Plankton, perhaps it doesn't show so good over video. I wish could bring you over to see for youself :\ For comparison , I have a 3-years-old laptop, much much lower specs than the new PC - and windows feels A LOT more responsive\fluent on it :\
@Xtech: What system do you have? Could you please share specs? I've updated everything from Intels' web-site and from ASUS. Tried every configuration and still - no good.
@clam1952: Yup, already have. I'm sure the integrated graphics are more than capable of handling web-browsing\normal desktop use in 4k. But for some reason everything feels kinda laggy here :\

Would appreciate any input you guys have!

Thanks everyone in advance,

Arye.

I'm assuming the refresh rate is correct for the monitor, pretty sure all 4k monitors are 60 Hertz?
ahci enabled in bios?
Maybe run a disk benchmark and check it's doing what it's supposed to?

@clam1952 : monitor is 60Hz but since i'm running from the iGPU via HDMI, the max is 30Hz.
Regarding the AHCI, from what I remember I disabled it and enable SATA\PCIe where necessary. IIRC, AHCI is an old storage protocol, right? Should it be enabled? Thanks!

As Plankton said AHCI is the newest and better for SATA, I presume the PcIe setting is just to enable the M2 slot.
30Hz is probably not going to be any good for graphics, will not be particularly smooth can't you use Display port or DVI or even VGA? all of which will allow the monitor to work at is native resolution, first Generation 4K monitors can only handle 30Hz though HDMI.
