Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. today announced the QualcommÂ® ultraSAW filter technology, another groundbreaking innovation in the companyâs industry-leading wireless technology portfolio that builds on the companyâs legacy of developing breakthrough technologies and enabling new experiences and expanding the mobile ecosystem.

Radio frequency (RF) filters isolate radio signals from the different spectrum bands that phones use to receive and transmit information. By achieving as much as 1 decibel (dB) improvement in insertion loss, Qualcomm ultraSAW filters offer a higher performance solution compared to competing bulk-acoustic (BAW) filters in the sub-2.7 GHz frequency range.

High performance filter technology enhances RF Front-End portfolio including modules and discrete filters

Qualcomm ultraSAW technology achieves superior filter characteristics to deliver high performance in frequencies from 600 MHz to 2.7 GHz with a range of benefits:

Excellent transmit, receive and cross isolation

High frequency selectivity

A Q-factor of up to 5000 â significantly higher than the quality factor of competing BAW filters

Very low insertion loss

Excellent temperature stability with very low temperature drift in the single-digit ppm/Kelvin range.

Qualcomm accelerates 5G across Snapdragon 8, 7, and 6 series in 2020 Mobile

At IFA 2019, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, announced their plans to accelerate 5G global commercialization at scale by expanding its portfolio of 5G mobile platforms across the Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series and 6 Series in 2020. With over 150 5G designs launched or in development to date using the Company’s 5G solutions, Qualcomm Technologies is driving the proliferation of 5G across multiple tiers to make the next-generation of camera, video, AI and gaming experiences more broadly available. This expanded portfolio rollout aims to support features and frequency bands globally and has the potential to make 5G accessible to more than 2 billion smartphone users.

These new mobile platforms will be the first in a roadmap of software-compatible 5G mobile platforms and take advantage of the Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System. This breakthrough Snapdragon system is designed to deliver best-in-class cellular performance, coverage, power-efficiency, and cutting-edge form factors in 5G devices, at global scale. Snapdragon’s expanded portfolio of 5G mobile platforms is designed to support all key regions and frequency bands including mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum, TDD and FDD modes, 5G multi-SIM, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, and Standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures – providing flexibility and enabling 5G network deployment roadmaps globally.

The flagship Snapdragon 8 Series is already powering leading 5G mobile devices that were introduced globally in 2019. More details on the next generation Snapdragon 8 Series 5G Mobile Platform will come later this year.

First to announce an integrated 5G platform back in February of this year, the Company’s Snapdragon 7 Series 5G Mobile Platform will have 5G integrated into a SoC (System-on-Chip) and support all key regions and frequency bands. This highly efficient mobile platform built on 7nm process technology is designed to exceed what is expected from today’s high-tier mobile experiences by bringing select premium-tier features, including the next gen Qualcomm® AI Engine and select Qualcomm® Snapdragon Elite Gaming™ features, to a broader audience.

Twelve leading global OEMs and brands including OPPO, realme, Redmi, Vivo, Motorola, HMD Global, the home of Nokia smartphones, and LG Electronics, plan to use this new integrated Snapdragon 7 Series 5G mobile platform in their future 5G mobile devices. The integrated Snapdragon 7 Series 5G Mobile Platform began sampling to customers in the second quarter of 2019. Samsung announces mass production of Exynos 5G and RF chips

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its 5G communication solutions are in mass production for the latest premium mobile devices. The 5G multi-mode chipsets include the previously-introduced Exynos Modem 5100 as well as a new single-chip radio frequency transceiver, the Exynos RF 5500, and supply modulator solution, the Exynos SM 5800, all supporting 5G New Radio (5G-NR) sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) spectrum and legacy radio access technologies that provide mobile device manufacturers with optimum network communication solutions for the 5G era.

“Samsung has been an innovator in mobile communication technologies with a strong portfolio of market-proven solutions, and we are well-prepared to extend our leadership into 5G,” said Inyup Kang, president of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our multi-mode solutions, the Exynos Modem 5100, Exynos RF 5500 and Exynos SM 5800 will together enable powerful yet energy-efficient 5G performance along with the network versatility that allows users to stay connected wherever they are.”

Exynos Modem 5100 is Samsung’s first 5G modem solution that had completed preparations for commercialization in August, 2018, with a successful over-the-air (OTA) 5G-NR data call test. The modem supports virtually all networks from 5G’s sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums to 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and 4G LTE networks in a single chip.

For reliable and power-efficient performance, the modem is paired with RF and supply modulator solutions, Exynos RF 5500 and Exynos SM 5800 respectively.

Samsung’s Exynos RF 5500 supports legacy networks and 5G-NR sub-6GHz networks in a single chip, offering added flexibility in smartphone designs, especially for today’s premium mobile devices. RF transceivers are key components that allow smartphones to transmit and receive data over the cellular network. When transmitting voice or data from a smartphone to a carrier, the RF up-converts the modem’s baseband signal to high GHz-range cellular frequencies so that data can be sent swiftly over the connected network. Vice versa, when receiving, the signal is down-converted by the RF to baseband frequencies for it to be processed by the modem. The Exynos RF 5500 has 14 receiver paths for download, and supports 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and higher-order 256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) scheme to maximize the data transfer rate over the 5G network.

The Exynos SM 5800 is a low-power supply modulator solution for 2G to 5G-NR sub-6GHz that supports up to 100MHz envelope-tracking (ET) bandwidths. As the possibilities for richer content with higher data rates open up with the arrival of 5G, maintaining a highly efficient RF has become more critical in ensuring a longer battery life in a mobile device. The Exynos SM 5800 demonstrates up to a 30-percent power reduction by dynamically adjusting the supply voltage according to the modem’s RF input signal. With an advanced power optimizing ET solution for RF, data can be transmitted more efficiently and reliably over the incredibly fast 5G network.

Both the Exynos RF 5500 and SM 5800’s technological breakthroughs have been recognized by the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) committee and were presented at ISSCC 2019 held at San Francisco last February.

As the industry moves forward to unfold and discover the full benefits of 5G, Samsung plans to continue pushing for innovation in mobile communication technologies, including RF transceiver and phased array solutions for mmWave along with 5G-embedded mobile processors, that will further drive the proliferation of new applications in mobile devices and emerging industries.
