Windows 10: New safety features for Facebook Messenger to give more control

When people trust their messages are private and feel safe online, they can express themselves freely. We build features that empower people to stay in control of their privacy and avoid potential abuse or harm. Safer Internet Day is a chance to remind everyone about new and existing Messenger features for privacy and safety that can help when messaging, calling or video chatting with close connections.

Safety Notices: Safety notices provide tips to educate people on spotting suspicious activity and taking action to block, report or ignore someone when something doesnât seem right. We developed these safety tips with machine learning that looks at someoneâs activity on our apps to help educate people on avoiding scams or spotting impersonations, or to help avoid interacting with unconnected adults. Since introducing our safety notices, weâve educated close to 70 million people a month to avoid potential harm.

App Lock: App Lock adds another layer of security to private messages and helps prevent other people from accessing them. App Lock uses a deviceâs privacy settings like fingerprint or face authentication to unlock the Messenger app. A personâs touch or face ID is not transmitted or stored by Facebook.

Privacy Settings: The privacy settings section makes it easy to access choices and controls like blocked people or audience for stories and muted stories. We also introduced new controls that let you decide who can message your Chats list, who goes to your requests, and who canât message or call you at all.

Forwarding Limits: Forwarding limits on Messenger ensure that a message can only be forwarded to five people or groups at a time. Limiting forwarding is an effective way to slow the spread of viral misinformation and harmful content that has the potential for abuse.

Safer Message Requests: Message requests now come with new features to give you context for who the requestor is, bulk delete options, and blurred images or videos. We also made the delete and block options more prominent in the request thread to help people take action if they donât want to reply to the message.

Improved Reporting: Weâre testing new ways to make it easier for people to report abuse or harassment and providing better feedback on the status of reported messages.

Review Blocked Accounts: In addition to making blocking more prominent in message requests and safety notices, we provided more transparency in the privacy settings so you can easily review accounts youâve blocked.

We built these features with privacy and safety by design from the ground up. We also improved our product design to make some of these features easier to find. While some of them may not be available everywhere, our Privacy and Safety Hub and help center articles are available with more information.

In addition, weâre developing more innovative features that use activity across our platforms to prevent harm or abuse before it happens. For example, we use behavioral signals like an adult sending a large amount of friend or message requests to people under 18 to share safety notices, identify and remove potentially harmful accounts and protect minors. This is part of our prevention, detection and response framework that preserves privacy while combating abuse.

We are constantly innovating to keep our community safe and secure and give people the context and controls they need to prevent or respond to unwanted interactions.

New Sleep Mode for Facebook Messenger Kids app

Messenger Kids was built to give parents more control and to give kids a safer space to message and video chat with close friends and family. Parental controls are core to the Messenger Kids experience, and today we’re launching a sleep mode for the app— a new feature that allows parents to set predetermined “off times” for the app on a child’s device.

Parents have told us that they like how Messenger Kids allows them to fully control the contact list and check in on their child’s messaging as they’re learning to navigate the digital world. But parents also told us they would like controls that make the app inaccessible at a certain time, like during dinner, homework time or bedtime. We took this feedback to heart and built a feature that gives that level of control to parents.

With sleep mode, parents can set a designated off time and each day at the designated time, the app will “go to sleep” and not be accessible to kids during those hours. Sleep mode is controlled from the Parent Control center in the parent’s Facebook account and the “off times” can be changed at any time.

It’s simple to use, and while you can go in and adjust the times at any time, you can also just set it and forget it so you don’t have to worry about constantly monitoring and changing the controls for the app.

How to Use Sleep Mode

1) Go to the Messenger Kids controls in the main Facebook app. Tap on the child’s name, and then on “Sleep Mode” in the App Controls section.

2) Set the times you want the app to turn off for your child. You can set different times for weekdays versus weekends. Once you set the limits, the child will not be able to use the app during those hours.

3) Have a conversation with your child. When you’re setting boundaries around the use of technology, it may be helpful to have a conversation with your child to make sure you have a mutual understanding of the ground rules. This could be a good time to let them know that you’re setting limits for them on Messenger Kids. For more guidance and resources, visit our Parents Portal at facebook.com/safety/parents.

4) Let sleep mode do its job. When the app is in sleep mode, kids cannot send or receive messages or video calls, play with the creative camera, or receive notifications. If they try to open the app, they’ll see a message telling them that it’s in sleep mode and to come back later.

Parents can access all of their controls from the Messenger Kids controls in the main Facebook app. In addition to sleep mode, parents can add and remove contacts, delete the child’s account, or create a new account right from the control panel.

Facebook enhances Messenger Rooms experience with new features

Today, we’re announcing new features to enhance your experience in Messenger Rooms, joinable group video calls that make it easy to spend quality time with friends, loved ones and people who share your interests.

Personalize your Room

In addition to Messenger’s AR effects, like immersive 360-degree backgrounds and mood lighting filters, we are starting to roll out a new way to personalize your room and video chats on mobile. We are introducing the ability to customize your background with your own photos so you can now video chat from your favorite sunset. You could even customize your background with a funny home video.

Create, Join and Manage Rooms within Messenger

We’re also rolling out a completely new and easier way to create and discover Rooms within Messenger on mobile – you can now create, share, manage and drop by a room all within your app. Within Messenger, you’ll be able to:

Discover Rooms: Rooms that you have been invited to will show up at the top of your Chats tab in your Inbox.

Create Rooms: Ability to create a room is front and center in your Chats tab.

Edit Rooms: You can create a room with a default, suggested or custom activity, set a future start date and customize your audience selection.

Manage Rooms: View, join, and edit the rooms you have created. You can also invite more people to a scheduled room and delete a room you don’t want to be active anymore.

Share Rooms: Send notifications to ensure your invited friends don’t miss out.
