Windows 10: New settings for smart features and personalization in Google Gmail

People have come to expect a lot from their email. But whether youâre an inbox zero master or a never-archiver, you want your email experience to be easy and secure. Since 2004, many have grown to love Gmail for its time-saving and security features. From assistive writing capabilities to high priority notifications to blocking more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing and malware from reaching your inbox, we built Gmail to make communication less of a chore.

In the same way, people have come to expect easier control of their dataâand here too, weâve been on a mission to take the work out of managing your privacy. Thatâs why our engineers at the Google Safety Engineering Center in Europe developed Privacy Checkup as an easy way to review key settings and see (and delete) the data that Google collects to provide you with helpful experiences. And itâs why we introduced auto-delete as the default this year to make control over your data even more automatic.

In the coming weeks, weâre launching yet another way to put you in control of your data and the Google experience, with a new setting for smart features and personalization in Gmail.

New setting for Smart features

Soon, youâll see a new setting for controlling whether your data in Gmail, Meet and Chat can be used to offer âsmartâ features in these and other Google products. Think: tabbed inbox, Smart Compose and Smart Reply in Gmail; reminders when your bills are due in the Google Assistant; and restaurant reservations in Google Maps.

The ability to turn on (or not) some of these individual smart features is not new. Whatâs new is a clearer choice over the data processing that makes them possible. This new setting is designed to reduce the work of understanding and managing that process, in view of what weâve learned from user experience research and regulatorsâ emphasis on comprehensible, actionable user choices over data.

Weâll continue evolving controls in our products to align with these trends. Because smart features rely on your data to save you time and provide a more helpful experience, we want you to use them because you find value in using them, not because theyâre simply there.

Continuing to protect your privacy

As with all Google products, Gmail, Meet and Chat are secure-by-design to help protect your data and safeguard your privacy. As before, these smart features are provided by using automated algorithms, not manual review. And, Google ads are not based on your personal data in Gmail, no matter which choice you make. You remain in control of your data, whether youâre an individual Gmail user or a Google Workspace administrator.

If you decide not to use smart features and personalization, you will still be able to use Gmail and our other products. And if you decide later on that these features are helpful and youâd like to turn them on, you can do so in your Gmail settings. At home or at work, the choice should be yours. And weâre always working to keep it simple.

Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail

Email makes it easy to share information with just about anyone—friends, colleagues and family—but drafting a message can take some time. Last year, we introduced Smart Reply in Gmail to help you quickly reply to incoming emails. Today, we're announcing Smart Compose, a new feature powered by artificial intelligence, to help you draft emails from scratch, faster.

Draft emails quickly with confidence

From your greeting to your closing (and common phrases in between), Smart Compose suggests complete sentences in your emails so that you can draft them with ease. Because it operates in the background, you can write an email like you normally would, and Smart Compose will offer suggestions as you type. When you see a suggestion that you like, click the “tab” button to use it.

Smart Compose helps save you time by cutting back on repetitive writing, while reducing the chance of spelling and grammatical errors. It can even suggest relevant contextual phrases. For example, if it's Friday it may suggest "Have a great weekend!" as a closing phrase.

Get started

Over the next few weeks, Smart Compose will appear in the new Gmail for consumers, and will be made available for G Suite customers in the workplace in the coming months.

To get started, make sure you’ve enabled the new Gmail by going to Settings > “Try the new Gmail.” Next, go to the general tab in your settings, scroll down and enable “experimental access.” If you want to switch back, you can always uncheck the box.

New user setting to hide or show Google Meet in Gmail

Quick launch summary

We previously announced the ability to start or join a Meet call in Gmail. We're now giving users the option to hide those features.

Getting started

Admins: Admins can disable Meet for their organization by turning off video calling in the Admin console. This launch adds a user-level setting.

End users: Follow the steps in the Help Center to hide or show Meet in Gmail for your account.

Rollout pace

Rapid and Scheduled Release domains: Gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starting on May 19, 2020
