Windows 10: New .tmp file each day that cannot be removed following recent update

I find successively each day a new .tmp file (now totalling five) in my Local>Temp folder that I am unable to remove. They started to appear following the major Windows update last week. Examples are wct2E7F.tmp, wct4C5E.tmp, etc. All have the same date and time of 26/08/2016 19:48 even though they occur daily. I obtain a "File Access Denied" window and message if I try to delete any of them.

Windows 10; After Each Prt Job, .TMP File Left in Printers Folder; Can't Delete, Error in Printfilterpipelinesvc.exe

I have the same problem since yesterday. I cannot delete the TMP files and get the same error message as above.

I was printing a pdf file from Adobe when the problem first occurred. I tried printing an e-mail from outlook and this generated more TMP files.

I use Windows Defender and updated my HP print drivers a week or so ago following the recent Windows 10 update.

I have run the troubleshooter and it didn't find any problems apart from print toner being low.

I understand printfilterpipelinesvc.exe isn't used by Windows 10 - can I uninstall it, and if so how?

 

Unable to delete temporary Windows Installer (msi) files.

I have the same problem with plenty of MSIxxxxx.tmp folders appearing on the root of my disk.

Although I am admin of my PC,I cannot get rid of those files.

Disk Cleanup on that disk does not show any file to delete.

My D: disk is where I store documents and software, including MSOffice.

For example, on February 22th, 10 files have been created

d:\MSI81ca2.tmp

d:\MSI81ca9.tmp

d:\MSI81cb0.tmp

d:\MSI81cb7.tmp

d:\MSI81cbe.tmp

d:\MSI81cc5.tmp

d:\MSI81ccc.tmp

d:\MSI81cd3.tmp

d:\MSI81cda.tmp

On February 10th, they were more than 80 new files.

Is there a way to solve this ?

No, no problem clearing my %temp% (and no wct----.tmp files either)





This thread suggests the problem was around in Win7 as well as Win10 and may well involve the Norton Web Curator Tool.

I do not use Norton, certainly. I wonder if you or anyone can advise me on how to obtain permission to delete such temporary files?

 

Temp files are often "locked" because the application that opened them still has them open. You would typically need to reboot to clear them if the app is long running (say a service, or something running in the background).

If you've already rebooted, then it may be a permissions issue and use Disk Cleanup to remove them.

 

Of A well-behaved app that uses the %temp% folder should clean up after itself or, at least, let Disk Clean-Up do it for you. So that's the first to thing to try.

The next step up is to take ownership of the file(s), grant yourself full control (if necessary) and try to delete them. Try again in Safe Mode if that fails. If you still can't because the files are in use, boot to a Command Prompt and try there.

The nuclear option is to boot from a Linux Live USB and delete them from outside windows.

Of course, that still doesn't answer the question of where they come from in the first place.

I thank you both for your constructive responses. I rebooted my PC and those particular .tmp files no longer appear. It is interesting to note: I have 'Shut down' my PC following each session since I first started to use Windows twenty years ago. Only recently have I observed perceived wisdom and chosen 'Sleep' mode instead. It seems to indicate neither option is necessarily better than the other for different reasons. I agree about the files themselves: we continue not to know what created them in the first instance.
