Windows 10: New to 10 and loads of problems

Sorry. I'm new to the forum and not sure where to post. And found serching confusing.

I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago - Windows 10, 64 bit Home Premium.
I am no newbie to home computers and used them for over 30 years but am having many problems now.

1. Although 64 bit, all software (including browsers) I've downloaded have automatically installed 32 bit versions (even though I know there are 64 bit versions which I use on my other (Windows 7) laptop.

2. BBC iPlayer won't run on any of the browsers. (For various reasons, I have Firefox, Chrome and Maxthon installed - as well as Edge & IE of course.) When I try using iPlayer, the whole browser freezes (They all do.) requiring me to close the browser using Task Manager. I have checked I have Shockwave and Flash updates installed.

Not at all impressed and continue to use my Windows 7 laptop (which is a pain as I want one laptop for my personal use and the other for the charity I chair).

Would really appreciate help.

I think you need to provide a better description of the problems you are experiencing. Just saying Edge doesn't load is not enough information. Include some description of your PCs hardware configuration would help too. Are there any errors messages to
the screen or in the Event log? You upgraded to Windows 10 from what, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?

As I understand it most browsers are 32 bits still. Waterfox (maintained by an individual) has a 64 bit version, but is huge.

As for Firefox, please see this:

No 64 bit version for public release yet.

You can of course manually find what you want if it's there and download it. The choice of a 64 bit version won't necessarily be made automatically by Windows for you.

FWIW, iplayer is fine on mine - provided I don't have addons that block flash running automatically as a security measure, I've just noticed.

 

It's not just my browsers. Libre Office, AVG, ASC et - all software I download is 32 bit rather than the 64 bit versions I have on my Windows 7 laptop!

Eventually getting there. Have managed to force 64 bit Libre Office on it.
And after multiple restarts have eventually managed to get iPlayer working too.

Yes, it feels uncomfortable at first and I found myself forced to make changes to the appearance immediately.
If you use it as a plain desktop, it's fine.

Install Classic Shell (free) and ignore Win 10's start menu, which doesn't render a traditional start menu usefully or accurately.
Hey, you can even put your own start button there with Classic Shell- I've got a Win 7 orb (and a lot of Win 7 icons); you might prefer XP's start button *Smile
