New update crippled my PC. All USB ports are dead after Windows starts up. This is not the...

Last night before I turned my PC off I let it update. This morning I started it up and all of my PC ports were dead. All of my peripherals keyboard, mouse, headphones, microphone were not usable with the PC. The RGB on the keyboard lights up but the keyboard input is not recognized, nothing happens when I press a key.

I had this happen a month or two ago and the ultimate choice I had to make was to completely wipe my PC and start new. Formatted all drives, didn't save anything, started brand new. I troubleshooted it all night on a Saturday because it seems that my biggest issues come on Saturday nights when I definitely don't have anything better to do than to sit and turn a computer off and on a thousand times. I updated my BIOS, reset my CMOS battery, booted in safe mode, etc. I tried everything. It seems there aren't a whole lot of people that I have seen with this problem which makes it even more fun and exciting.

As soon as Windows boots the peripherals "deactivate." I say deactivate because like I said the keyboard's RGB lights are on, but it doesn't work. However, I can access the UEFI by using the keyboard, since that is before Windows boots. I can use my mouse and keyboard in UEFI, and even in the Windows safe startup menu thing where the background is blue and you have the option to choose boot in safe mode, troubleshoot, boot with command prompt, etc..

I can't even see what update caused this because I can't get into the computer. All I know is that whenever this is resolved I am making every possible change I can to ensure that I never receive another Windows update again.

I just cannot believe I am having to go through this again. I am so frustrated. I just pray that someone has experienced this and found a solution because I do not want to have to format my entire PC again.

    :)

    USB port dead

    Hello Adam,

We appreciate the details that you've provided about your USB port issue. This may have occurred due to software conflict or a hardware issue. For us to help you with this, kindly answer the following questions for further research:

    • What is the current build and version number of your Windows 10? To check, press the Windows key, type winver, and press the Enter key.
    • We'd like to clarify the uninstalling and installing usb hub part. Have you tried

      updating your USB port driver
? Have you tried uninstalling the driver and let Windows install the compatible driver?
    • Have you tried rolling back the USB port driver to its previous version?

Meanwhile, in order to save power, Windows switches your USB controllers off when they’re not in use. We suggest that you check your Power management settings:

    • Type Device Manager in the Windows search field and open it.
    • Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch.
    • Double-click the first USB Root Hub device in the list.
    • Click the Power Management tab.
    • Un-check the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox, and click
      OK.
    • Repeat steps 3-5 for each USB Root Hub device in your list of Universal Serial Bus controllers.

We'll be waiting for your reply.

  3. Dead USB ports

After downgrading from windows 8 to windows 7 on a HP Pavilion laptop PC two of the three USB ports don't recognise anything that's plugged into them, the two dead ports are on the left hand side of the PC, the port on the right hand side is working fine,
I've tried updating the drivers and the message I keep getting is the drivers are up to date, I tried other options to try and fix the problem but nothing doing, be glad if anyone can advise me on how to solve this problem

USB ports not working in Windows 10

    Hello ruthives,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To address your concern, kindly help us with the below questions.

    1. What is the make and model of the computer?
    2. Do you read any error message when you connect the device to the USB port?
    3. Are you facing this issue with any particular USB port or with all the USB ports?
    4. Since when are you facing this issue?

Your device is kept up to date with the latest features by automatically installing the updates in Windows 10. To narrow down the issue, let's go ahead and follow the below methods and see if it helps.

Method 1: I would suggest you to follow the steps to diagnose and repair the USB ports from the article -

Automatically diagnose and fix Windows USB problems.

    Method 2: Update USB controllers.

    • Right click on the Start menu and select Device Manager from the list.
    • Narrow down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and update all the USB drivers.
    • To update the drivers, right click on the each driver and select Update driver.
    • If that doesn't resolve the issue, I would suggest you to uninstall all the USB drivers from the device manager.
    • Reboot the PC and it will automatically pick for the latest drivers for your PC.

If the issue persists, download and install the latest USB drivers available for your PC build from the
manufacturer's website and see if it works.

    Hope it helps.
