Windows 10: New Updates in LinkedIn Messaging

We know you use LinkedIn Messaging to have a variety of professional conversations, whether it’s chatting with a teammate about work, discussing a job opportunity with a recruiter, asking a mutual connection for career advice, or sharing ideas with someone in your industry. These conversations can take a number of formats -- some more formal, others more chat-like in real-time, or in a group.

To help make it easier for you to communicate the way you want, when you want, we’ve made some updates to messaging to make your exchanges more useful and enjoyable:

Stretch your compose box to write longer messages

You can now move out of the chat-like interface and expand the message compose box across platforms for those times when you just need a little more space to compose longer, thoughtful and more formal messages. This is available now on mobile, and coming in the next few weeks to desktop.

Share attachments on-the-go

We know how hectic your work day can get so to make it easier for you to message on-the-go, we’ve now added the ability to send attachments from your phone in the LinkedIn app. Contacted by a recruiter and want to send your resume right away? Just tap the attachment icon and select from the approved file types including PDF, DOC, XLS, and PPT to upload.

This has been one of the most frequently requested messaging features from all of you, and we’re excited to make it simple to attach and send from your phone.

Send emojis from desktop with new emoji picker

Sometimes a perfectly selected emoji is worth a thousand words. We want to make it easier for you to express yourself, so now you can quickly send emojis from your desktop with our emoji picker. Select emojis by scrolling through the list, searching by keyword, or choosing a category for options.

Easily start and manage group messages

There’s now a new way to create group messages in the LinkedIn app that makes it effortless for you to start conversations with people that you care about like coworkers, alumni, or peers in the same industry. Now when you tap on the “+” icon to create a new message, you’ll be prompted with smart suggestions for groups based on your current or former company, where you went to school, or people you’ve recently messaged with.

Additionally, you can now remove people from your group messages in the LinkedIn app. Simply tap on the three dots on the top right of your group message and tap on remove people.

Mention people in your messages

With @ mentions in messaging you can now more easily direct a comment at someone in a group message. You can also @ mention any of your connections in a 1:1 conversation to share their profile and recommend that the other person reach out to them.

Quickly copy + paste images on web

Emojis aren’t the only way we’re helping you make your messages more visual. You can now seamlessly copy and paste images from screenshots and images on the web into your LinkedIn messages, making sharing visuals that much more quick and easy.

Updates to LinkedIn Terms of Service on June 7th 2017

At LinkedIn, our “members first” philosophy helps guide every decision we make, including how we gather and respect your personal information. Today, we’re giving you an early look at LinkedIn’s updated Terms of Service - our Privacy Policy and User Agreement - so that you can understand what’s changing before it takes effect on June 7, 2017.

It’s been a little while since we updated our Terms of Service and we’ve taken this opportunity to shorten and reorganize our Privacy Policy to make it even clearer and easier for our members to understand. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to giving you control over your personal information.

Our updated Privacy Policy enables and provides information on new LinkedIn features, and choices over how your information is used:

Increased visibility of your LinkedIn Profile - Similar to the way your profile shows up in search engines, we will allow certain third-party services to show your profile to their users, so that you can be more easily found for opportunities and connect with people. You can opt out of this broader distribution of your profile, and you control what you share on your profile.

Easier to share accomplishments with your network - To make it easier to update your profile, we’ll look for and suggest positive and public professional accomplishments, like awards or industry recognition, to share with your network. You can opt out if you decide you don’t want these recommendations.

Productivity bots and similar tools to improve communication with your network - You can opt-in to use our automated systems that can help you with messages by suggesting responses, assisting in scheduling meetings with connections, generating ice breakers, or offering insights to help you connect with other professionals more easily.

Easily meet up with other members - You can choose to use an upcoming feature that helps you find nearby LinkedIn members, who have also opted-in, at a conference, event or meeting.

Keep learning new skills on Lynda - Your learning account on Lynda continues to be covered by the Lynda privacy policy.

Our updated User Agreement will look familiar, with a few changes that are highlighted in our summary, including:

Dos and Don’ts - We’ve added clarity about the activities allowed on LinkedIn. For example, we prohibit both the act of scraping others’ content from our services, and the development and support of tools to scrape LinkedIn services.

Payment Terms - If you choose to purchase some of our Premium services, we have added additional clarity around our payment terms.

Irish Law - Our members and visitors outside the U.S. will now be governed by Irish law (rather than California law) and can have disputes settled in Irish courts.

You might have heard that at the end of last year we became a part of Microsoft, but our services are still provided under a separate Terms of Service. We’re excited about leveraging Microsoft technology and resources to offer more valuable features and services to you. Microsoft + LinkedIn: Beginning our Journey Together

Today is an exciting day, one I’ve been looking forward to since June. It marks the close of the agreement for Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn and the beginning of our journey to bring together the world’s leading professional cloud and the world’s leading professional network.

As our two companies’ leadership teams have spent time together these last few months, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of and appreciation for LinkedIn’s relentless focus on its members.

Today I am even more enthusiastic about the common mission and sense of purpose we share, the similarities in our cultures, and the added value we can create for LinkedIn members, to help professionals transform how they work, realize new career opportunities and connect in new ways.

In June we outlined our shared vision for the opportunity ahead and since then, our teams have worked hard to build an integration plan.

In the immediate term we will pursue a specific set of integration scenarios, for example:

LinkedIn identity and network in Microsoft Outlook and the Office suite

LinkedIn notifications within the Windows action center

Enabling members drafting résumés in Word to update their profiles, and discover and apply to jobs on LinkedIn

Extending the reach of Sponsored Content across Microsoft properties

Enterprise LinkedIn Lookup powered by Active Directory and Office 365

LinkedIn Learning available across the Office 365 and Windows ecosystem

Developing a business news desk across our content ecosystem and MSN.com

Redefining social selling through the combination of Sales Navigator and Dynamics 365

As we articulated six months ago, our top priority is to accelerate LinkedIn’s growth, by adding value for every LinkedIn member.

However, we also see a greater opportunity to help ensure that everyone can benefit from digital technology and the new opportunities created by the digital economy. As Brad Smith recently shared, Microsoft – inclusive of LinkedIn – can take steps to help people develop new skills online, find new jobs and easily connect and collaborate with colleagues. Technology alone will not solve these challenges, but together, working across private and public sectors, we can create more opportunity for everyone to participate and share in economic growth.

On behalf of the entire Microsoft team, I want to extend a warm welcome to every LinkedIn employee to Microsoft.

I am energized and optimistic for what we can achieve together and the journey ahead.

problem connecting to LinkedIn

I have downloaded the app. It is only a partial solution. I can post updates to LinkedIn, see invitations and messages, which is good. The links from LinkedIn emails still don't work.

It's good to know it's a LinkedIn problem and not something odd with my particular phone or settings. I'll report the problem as you suggest.
