Windows 10: New version of SKYPE - terrible -- back to previous version

I've been fooling around with it hard for about a week, and frankly, I think it's quite user friendly once you get used to it.

(Doesn't have that annoying: Quit►"Are you sure you want to quit Skype, you might miss...►YES, I want to quit!!! bs! Closed is closed!) *Wink

It's gonna kick your classic Skype out; it won't uninstall it, but you won't be able re-activate it either so, keep the classic Skype exe on hand.

 

Thanks for the 'Troubleshoot compatibility' hint. I got 8.13 to install but it looks just like the Skype Store app 12.13 (no wonder it sends me back to Store; lol) with the addition of dozens of spam contacts that I blocked and reported. I ran them side by side to compare and that was the only immediate diff. So I uninstalled and put 7.40 back on (I keep ALL installed software exe's in case a Reset or Clean install is needed) just to have a more familiar toolbar at the top and type phone number to call feature. Thanks for clearing all that up, I can live with the extra step to close the desktop program.

I have latest Skype on Windows and Android...both suck equally much. Total garbage...

Skype was working perfectly until MS bought it...since then it has only moved backwards in usability and reliability. And lately even the visual appearance has started to move backwards.

Since I depend on Skype, I am SO ready to write my own version of it, using just the Skype SDK and protocols.

 

I don't know if it sucks totally but it does pale up against many other apps.

Heck, Google Allo/Duo has more features than Skype!

Why does it seem lately, that everything MS is buying up goes to sh*t!?!?!?

 

I have been wondering the same thing for 10-15 years...go figure.

Only thing that has gone for the better is the purchase of Xamarin. Now everyone can write mobile apps to 3 platforms with one code base leveraging .NET. And all for free because of the fusion with MS.

 

I installed Skype 8 then when I saw 7 was still listed in programs used REVO to uninstall it. Went to remove Click to Call and couldn't uninstall it since it wasn't installed *Confused

 

As are most of their apps, I do not use many of them.

 

I just downloaded Classic Skype from skype.com
Selected "Get Classic Skype" from the blue dropdown button.

Installed.

Disabled in App ADs by going to Internet Options in Control Panel, switching to Security tab, adding the following to restricted sites: Code: https://apps.skype.com[/quote]
And finally went to editing with Notepad: Code: C:\Users\[MY WINDOWS USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\skype\[MY SKYPE ID]\config.xml[/quote]
Switched the line:
Code: <AdvertPlaceholder>1</AdvertPlaceholder>[/quote]
to


Code: <AdvertPlaceholder>0</AdvertPlaceholder>[/quote]
Now I have AD free Classic Skype for Windows Desktop version 7.40.0.151

Yes I like features like insta sharing voice messages and videos, but all the other stuff is something that I would disable. Also, I have one of the most powerful Android phones there is at the moment and still Skype is a bit laggy... *Sad

SKYPE for Linux works just fine too (classic Interface)

I'm not sure why people find all this stuff Memory hogs etc -- if you don't have the relevant hardware don't run the app or if you try just for the sake of it don't complain if it performs at less than stellar speed assuming you can get it to work at all..

My problem is generally this idiotic system of trying to make all desktop computer apps look like Mobile phone apps -- I have 2 HUGE monitors plus 2 more standard size ones and decent keyboards -- why do I need something that looks like it's been designed to run on a 6 inch (13 cm or so) screen !!!!. when I've got almost enough screen real estate to run the U.S super Bowl on.

Actually the SKYPE mobile app isn't too bad on Android though !!!!!

If you do a lot of business stuff rather than things like Twatter for Twats, Farcebook , Snapchat etc etc then skype is a good business tool --screen sharing is also very handy -- just recently doing a 5 way Video business conference with screen sharing between ICELAND, RUSSIA, UK, USA and CHILE. Worked perfectly.

There's a lot of "Evil Empire" rubbish complaints against Ms -- Without Ms where would cheap personal computing be on this planet -- it's good to have Linux there too just so Ms can't rest too much on its laurels. I don't think Apple would have supplied the mass market out there with reasonably cheap computing where you can connect any single device in the known universe to an OS and usually - even with a bit of difficulty - it works -- and that's coming from me - primarily a Linux user.

And to end on a more altruistic note - Bill Gates - although not really day to day involved with Ms any more has created one of the biggest charitable foundations on the planet and the charitable works that his foundation does really do make the U.N look like an Evil Empire !!!!!!
