New Windows 10 PRO install - moving windows folders to another drive so that they are still...

I am currently building a new PC.

It will have a Samsung EVO PRo 250GB boot SDD and a 1TB SABRENT SSD for storage of games etc.
The logic behind this build is I wanted maximum windows boot performance, without having to buy 1 TB plus of Samsung EVO PRO SSD's. serious expensive.

Also if ever the primary SDD that windows is installed to died I am hoping it would simply be a case of reinstalling WINDOWS to a new drive, without having to reinstall all the programs installed on the D drive. I'm not even sure this is possible windows registry etc but that's why I am asking this question.

With everything that is not the WINDOWS OS on a secondary drive this will also make backups easier as all MY data and program installs are on the same drive.

What I would like to do once Windows 10 is installed is to move as many Windows folders as possible that store my data and programs to the secondary SSD so that windows fully support them once they are moved.

I definitely want to move the the USERS folder so that my DOCUMENTS, PICTURES, and DOWNLOADS folder are on the D: drive

Ideally I would like to move the PROGRAM FILES, PROGRAM FILES 86 and PROGRAM DATA folders as well.

So the question is is these even possible, or equally relevant, advisable.

It is important that if folders are moved that windows recognises these folder have moved and any windows system variables or mappings are also modified, so that those programs that decide they want to install to a specific windows folder will install to the D drive.

Has anyone successfully done this? Can it be done safely without creating Windows heartache at a later point?

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink New Windows 10 PRO install - moving windows folders to another drive so that they are still... ;)
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

    Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
    Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
    mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.

Installing Windows 10 using Windows 7 key

Nope, you need to install Windows 10 first and make sure the Windows 7 key is transferred to your Windows account after you've installed Windows 10 (not quite sure how that works). I missed the last step and I could not activate Windows 10 after a re-install... Microsoft seem to have done everything they can to make it a PITA. Also, it's technically too late to do this now anyhow, as the upgrade offer has expired. But KMSPico works quite well...

As for getting rid of Windows, delete the Windows folder.
